We start in the book of Matthew - written to a Jewish audience.
Throughout the Old Testament, God had provided leaders to help the people connect with him. Priests, Prophets, and Kings.
The Jews had been waiting for God to send them a King who would rightfully restore the nation of Israel.
The book of Matthew starts with a list of names, but to a Jew, Matthew is showing them so much more. He is showing them that the King has arrived.

Matthew 1:1

The name Jesus is the Greek equivalent of Jeshua, Jehovah or Yahweh or God saves. Christ is not his last name. It means anointed one.
The Jews would anoint their prophets, priests, and kings. Which is Jesus? He is all three.
As a prophet, he speaks on behalf of God to the people.

John 12:49-50

As a priest, he intercedes for the people.

Hebrews 4:14-16

Matthew and Luke give genealogies of Jesus - Matthew working forward from Abraham and Luke working backward from Jesus to Adam.
Luke’s genealogy is of Mary’s family - he traces Jesus’ lineages all the way to King David through his son Nathan. Jesus has royal blood running through his veins through Mary’s family.

Revelation 5:4-5

Matthew’s genealogy is the lineage of Joseph.

Matthew 1:16

Matthew is establishing Jesus’ legal standing. He is the legal son of Joseph. Joseph’s list also traces back to King David, but this time through his son Solomon.
The child in the manger was Jesus. He had the legal right and the blood right to the throne. He was indeed born king of the Jews.
This was not just King of the Jews, but the very son of God.
This is the grand collision of the upper story into the lower story.
Matthew’s genealogy is unique in its mention of women, a scandalous inclusion in Jewish culture at the time. Mary is the last, but Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Bathsheba all had a sorted past.
In the genealogy, barriers come down - between men and women, Jews and Gentiles, and good people and people with checkered pasts.
The mystery in the manger is the Son of God.

Matthew 3:17

2 Peter 1:16-18

John 3:16

You know God loves you because God sent his son Jesus to earth.
Jesus came into the world through broken people. Jesus still comes into the world through broken people.

Luke 1:37
