Pastor Phil Ward - How Good is God our Father
Luke 15:1-2 (NKJ)
“Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.” 3 So He spoke this parable to them:
First Parable: “The Parable of the Lost sheep”
(NKJ) V.6-7. “And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ 7 I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.
Second Parable: “Parable of the Lost Coin
(NKJ) V.9-10 “And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbours together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ 10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
The Third Parable of Jesus: “the parable of the prodigal son.”
Ps. 139:17-18 (TPT)
“Every single moment you are thinking of me!How precious and wonderful to consider that you cherish me constantly in your every thought!O God, your desires toward me are more than the grains of sand on every shore! When I awake each morning, you’re still with me.
The bible says V.20. (NASB) “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.”
Jesus came to reveal the Father to us”
John 17:25-26 (TPT)
“You are my righteous Father, but the unbelieving world has never known you in the perfect way that I know you! And all those who believe in me also know that you have sent me! 26 I have revealed to them who you are and I will continue to make you even more real to them, so that they may experience the same endless love that you have for me, for your love will now live in them, even as I live in them!”
Father, I have sinned against heaven and in Your sight. I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Make me as one of your hired men”-(NASB. V. 28-19)
Listen how the Message trans. brings it out (V.21-22) “Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever again.’
But notice the next verse in the (MSG) V.22. “But the father wasn’t listening”
The gospel of the “Good News” has wrapped itself around this young man and drowned out his best speech.
HOW AMAZING IS GOD OUR FATHER!
Now let’s look at the older brother in the Parable:
V.28 (MSG) “The older brother stalked off in an angry sulk and refused to join in.”
Luke 15:29 (TPT)
“The son said, ‘Father, listen! How many years have I been working like a slave for you, performing every duty you’ve asked as a faithful son? And I’ve never once disobeyed you. But you’ve never thrown a party for me because of my faithfulness. Never once have you even given me a goat that I could feast on and celebrate with my friends like he’s doing now
Luke 15:11-12 (NASB)
“A certain man had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the estate that falls to me.’ And he divided it between them”
V.31 (TPT): “My son, you are always with me by my side. Everything I have is yours to enjoy.
It’s All yours’s son ---You could have had a party anytime you wanted and I would have joined in the party ---don’t you see that?”
The older brother spent all those years trying to earn it, trying to earn what was already his.
The bible says his father came and Pleaded with him. ---(Paraphrase V.28)
“Come on, son, this is your party too. This is our celebration. This is life in my house. Come join us, you belong here.”
Summary: Let me read again what Jesus said in John 17:25-26 (TPT) “You are my righteous Father, but the unbelieving world has never known you in the perfect way that I know you! And all those who believe in me also know that you have sent me! 26 I have revealed to them who you are and I will continue to make you even more real to them, so that they may experience the same endless lovethat you have for me, for your love will now live in them, even as I live in them!”
HOW AMAZING IS GOD OUR FATHER!
What’s the DO’S and DON’Ts that we can take from this Parable?
The Do’s ---Get to know Jesus and you’ll get to know your Heavenly Father and His tremendous Love for you!
The Don’ts ---Don’t let your failures and past mistakes hold you back in your relationship with Jesus
---Don’t get caught in the performance trap by thinking that you have to do something to gain God’s approval
1 John 3:1 (GW)
“Consider this: The Father has given us His love. He loves us so much that we are actually called God’s dear children. And that’s what we are…”
