In this fractured world, a story like that warms your heart a little and reminds you that there are opportunities to do good around us all the time.

Galatians 5:22-23

The word for “goodness” here is “agathosune.”

“Aathosune” means doing what’s good even if it’s hard, it can correct, rebuke, and discipline. But the call of “agathosune” isn’t just to seek to do good, it’s also to seek to be good, to embody what’s upright and excellent, to be ripe with goodness.
As much as we like goodness, it’s important to recognize that, in truth, we have a love-hate relationship with it. In truth, we don’t like goodness as much as we think we do.

Mark 10:18

Jesus corrects him and in doing so, he makes two key points.

The first is that we are not good.
Psalm 5 and 14 both say “there is no one who does good.” Ecclesiastes adds that “There is not a righteous person on earth who does what is right and never sins.”[1] Paul sums this up in Roman 3:23 saying “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” And what all of this makes painfully clear is the truth that no one is truly and fully good.

[1] Psalm 14:1, 53:1, Ecclesiastes 7:20

Now, it’s important to realize that when the scripture says we’re sinners, it’s not saying there’s nothing in good us.
The second key thing Jesus said to that you man is that God is good.
I know some people look at all the wrong in the world and say there’s no God, or that if there is, He can’t be good. But I have two responses to that. First is that they’re often blaming God for the failings of humanity
A second response is to realize that how we have seen God is a matter of perceptive. Because I can tell you story after story of people who’ve dealt with hard, even terrible things and still say that God is good.

Galatians 6:10

Here we see also that the call is for us to seek to do good to all people, especially in the church so that the light from this place can shine brightly in the world, but we’re called to do good to everyone, no exceptions!

1 Peter 2:12

The key point here is that Peter explains that our call isn’t just to go out at do some good here and there, he says we’re to “live good,” to “live good lives.” Such “good lives” that those who don’t know God will see them and glorify God.

Romans 12:21

The Bible is clear that evil is real and at work in this world and that it will seek to overcome us time and again and control us as much as it can.
Here Paul is reminding us that this is not just a moral battle within us, it’s also a spiritual war, one that we can’t win on our own because we aren’t good, and we can’t be good without God’s power at work in us, and even then we’ll never be perfect!
We don’t love goodness as much as we think we do and we simply aren’t able to do what is good and to seek to be people who are filled with goodness as easily as we think we can.

Matthew 12:35

What Jesus says here is so important. He says that what comes from us tends to reflect what’s inside us, it tends to reflect who we are.
That’s what God calls us to do, to constantly seek to overcome our sinful nature and be people who don’t just do good, but who are ripe with goodness! Not to earn God’s love and acceptance, God already loves and accepts us, but to please God, to be the better people He calls us to be, and to seek to make this world a better place in His name!

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light
Whom shall I fear
You crush the enemy underneath my feet
You are my sword and shield
Though troubles linger still
Whom shall I fear

I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies is always by my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a friend of mine
The God of angel armies is always by my side

My strength is in Your name
For You alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear

(And) nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in Your hands
I'm holding on to Your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful

CCLI Song # 6440288
