John 1:35-51

John 1:35-51
Pastor Jerry Koller
The John mentioned in verse 35 is John the Baptist.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
· We are not told whom he said this too but what’s the use of saying “look” if no one was with you?
· We are not told whom he said this too but what’s the use of saying “look” if no one was with you?
The day after that, John was with two of his disciples when he again saw Jesus passing by. Like the day before, he told his comrades, “Look, the Lamb of God.”
· There had to be a strong element of trust between himself and his disciples.
· There had to be a strong element of trust between himself and his disciples.
Verse 40 tells us that Andrew was one of the two disciples of John the Baptist that had an encounter with Jesus.
· Many scholars believe the Apostle John may have been the other one.
· Many scholars believe the Apostle John may have been the other one.
The first thing Andrew did after hanging out with Jesus for the day. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). (John 1:41)
When John the Baptist acknowledged Jesus, he referred to Him as the Lamb of God. But Andrew did not refer to Him that way. He referred to Him as the Messiah, which means “the anointed one” or “the chosen one.”
· John’s focus was on Jesus as God’s sacrificial lamb.
· Andrew viewed Jesus as the Promised One, the Messiah (or the Greek equivalent—the Christ).
· John’s focus was on Jesus as God’s sacrificial lamb.
· Andrew viewed Jesus as the Promised One, the Messiah (or the Greek equivalent—the Christ).
And he brought him to Jesus. (John 1:42)
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” (John 1:43)
Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” (John 1:45)
· Like Andrew, who found his brother, Philip finds Nathanael which indicates that there must have been a relationship between the two.
· Nathanael responded skeptically.
· Like Andrew, who found his brother, Philip finds Nathanael which indicates that there must have been a relationship between the two.
· Nathanael responded skeptically.
“Come and see,” said Philip.
As Nathanael approached, Jesus commented on his integrity—which puzzled Nathanael because he had never met Jesus before.
· In verse 48, Jesus explains.
· Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” (John 1:49)
· In verse 48, Jesus explains.
· Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” (John 1:49)
· John the Baptist calls Jesus the Lamb of God.
· Andrew calls Him the Messiah, the Christ.
· Philip refers to Jesus as the one Moses and the Prophets spoke about.
· Nathanael calls Him the Son of God and the King of Israel.
· Andrew calls Him the Messiah, the Christ.
· Philip refers to Jesus as the one Moses and the Prophets spoke about.
· Nathanael calls Him the Son of God and the King of Israel.
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Cor. 2:14)
The Holy Spirit revealed what each person needed to know.
3 Principles
1. Credibility
Credible means appearing to merit belief or acceptance. It means capable of being believed.
A credible person is one who is trustworthy, one who is truthful, one who leads a moral and ethical life—one who lives out his or her faith.
2. Seeking
Andrew sought out his brother Peter. And he brought him to Jesus. (John 1:42) Philip sought out his friend, Nathanael. One person addressed family. The other addressed friends.
3. Inviting
Do not let skepticism keep you from inviting someone to come to Jesus.
· “Come and see,” said Philip.
· “Come and see,” said Philip.
APPLICATION
1. Pray that God will reveal someone to you who knows you are a credible person. It may be a family member. It may be a friend. It may be a co-worker.
2. Will you share Jesus with that person this week and after you share, will you invited them to come to Jesus?
3. Send me an email describing how you followed these steps as well as the results of your encounter?
