Commentary on Luke 4:14-30 by Steven Cole, Pastor of Flagstaff Christian Fellowship and graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary.

1. Rabbi Jesus observed the sabbath.
For Reflection/Discussion:
People can actually break the 4th commandment in two different ways. The 1st is to not observe the sabbath at all - the poster child being a workaholic. The 2nd way one brakes the biblical principle of sabbath is sloth and laziness. Meaning - are humans entitled to a three day work week and four day weekends? According to the 4th commandment, what's the biblical balance between work and rest? In which way do you tend to err? Is all work necessarily defined by employment and a paycheck? If not, how does someone like a homemaker accomplish biblical balance? For someone who does not observe the sabbath, what do you imagine is at the root their disobedience?

7 Startling Facts: An Up Close Look...
"... findings reveal that the actual rate of church attendance from head counts is less than half of the 40% pollsters report."

For christians, the contemporary equivalent to the 1st century synagogue is their community church. Do you feel the local church has as much influence today as the local synagogue had in the 1st century? Other than the church, where is scripture held in high esteem and an anchor for relationships? If such places exist, should they or could they replace the church? How do you feel about people who desire God and discovering their own purpose for living but distance themselves from church?
