The Word on words - wk3 (Build Up)

The Word on words - wk3 (Build Up)

We each know intuitively that our words have a power to them. Power for good or for harm. It seems in our polarized culture today – it would be really good if we each could get better at HOW we use our words. We need some biblical wisdom on how we speak.

Tonight, I want us to lean into some wisdom from the Apostle Paul as he encourages us to use and even LEVERAGE our words to BUILD UP those around us! (see Ephesians 4:17-32) *verse 4:29 is our next memory verse
the Apostle Paul is writing to counter a worldview of the day and introduce a new exchange available in and through Jesus.
The verb “put off” (in v. 22) is in the aorist tense, so it describes a definite act. This “putting off” and ‘putting on’ is a once-and-for-all decision when we decide to accept Christ’s gift of salvation by faith.

*remember: Ephesians 2:8–9
“For it is by grace that you are saved, through faith, - and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God - not by works, so no one can boast.
*then right after his pleading to make this exchange – he whispers some wisdom about how this is to impact our speech – our words!

Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
no unwholesome talk = SAPROS (in greek)
=bad, stale, rancid, decayed, ROTTEN, putrefied, corrupted, no longer fit for use.
=described the smell of rotting fish; distasteful
Guard your mouth so that nothing distasteful comes out in your words.
*remember: James 3 – GUARD YOUR MOUTH!

We don’t want to serve up the worst to someone with our words!
We want to serve up what is GOOD & HELPFUL
*Paul isn’t pointing us to just be nice – he’s pointing us to BE HELPFUL.

Our words are to be BUILDING MATERIAL.
Every conversation is a CONSTRUCTION ZONE – where we build up people. Build up, so when they leave your presence – people are better off because they had been with you!
If you’re going to be a builder, instead of a demolisher.
“Get rid of” = doesn’t just mean ‘stop it’ = it means bag it up and take it out to the curb. We “Get rid” of trash.
We can’t be a builder if we’re bitter!
It affects the content and the intent of everything you say!
It affects our tone, our tactics and our treatment of people.
It affects what we say and what we refuse to say.

The antidote to bitterness is FORGIVENESS.
Forgiveness is the decision to give someone from your past something they don’t deserve so we are freed up to give people around us what they do deserve.

Don’t let the wounds from your past influence the words of your present!
Be Kind, Be compassionate.
Be HELPFUL.
BUILD UP.

Our world does so much demolition with our words.
Our world TEARS DOWN with our words.
We must BUILD UP.
TRUTH: the strongest people don’t put others done, they lift them up!
Every conversation is a construction zone! Come ready to BUILD UP.

This week: (memorize)

Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
