I want to challenge our church family to consider praying and fasting with us for the next 21 days. This month we are setting aside time to seek God and believe for His plan to be fulfilled in our lives as well as the life of our church throughout 2018 and beyond.
Let’s look at some examples of prayer and fasting in the life of Jesus, the early church, and Paul’s life.
1. Jesus fasted for 40 days in the wilderness.
Matthew 4:1-2; Luke 4:1-2
*Throughout this forty day period of temptation, Jesus felt it appropriate to fast.
2. Jesus taught His disciples about prayer and fasting.
Matthew 6:5-6;16-18
*What you do privately, God rewards openly.
3. How Jesus answered the questions as to why His disciples didn’t fast.
Luke 5:33-34
*The didn’t need to fast as long as Jesus was with them.
4. The combined power of prayer and fasting.
Matthew 17:14-21
*Fasting joined with prayer may accomplish things which normal faith may not by itself.
5. Prayer and Fasting in the early church.
A. The Church at Antioch. Acts 13:1-3
*Fasting, when accompanied with prayer, can done as a group when involved in
service to the Lord.
B. The Churches in Galatia. Acts 14:21-23
*Again, fasting can be a group activity in the work of a local church.
6. Paul fasted during his ministry.
2 Corinthians 6:4-10; 2 Corinthians 11:23-28
*In both of these passages, Paul mentioned fasting as a mark of his ministry and of his good standing as a minister of Christ!
7. Prayer and fasting while married.
1 Corinthians 7:5
*The only time husbands and wives may deprive one another is when by consent they devote
themselves to fasting and prayer for a specific period of time.
CONCLUSION:
As a summary, then, here is what we have seen in this study...
1. Our Lord fasted in time of temptation.
2. He taught His disciples about prayer and fasting.
3. He foretold of a time in which His disciples would fast.
4. There are times when the combination of fasting and prayer might be more effective than prayer alone.
5. The early church fasted in their service to the Lord.
6. Paul regarded fasting as a mark of his ministry.
7. Prayer and fasting often go hand in hand, can be utilized in a marriage whenever there was a strong desire for God’s blessing and guidance.
In view of such things, I can only conclude that Fasting does indeed have a place in the lives of Christians today. Prayer and fasting should be a normal part of our Christian lifestyle.
