Use this guide by yourself or with friends to study the Bible and pursue a deeper relationship with God.
Conversation Starter
Describe a time someone surprised you.
Begin your study with prayer
Pause for a few minutes to quiet your heart and mind. Ask God to help you experience His love and hear His voice as you reflect on this week’s lesson.
Personal Reflection/Group Discussion
Read Hebrews 11:29 and Exodus 14.

Hebrews 11:29

Exodus 14:1-31

1. Imagine stepping to the edge of a large body of water, then watching it separate so you could walk through to the other side. What would that be like? What thoughts would go through your mind?
2. What does it mean when the author of Hebrews says they passed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land?
3. The Egyptians seemed to have had as much courage as the Israelites (in crossing the Red Sea), but their stories had drastically different endings. In what way is courage not enough?
4. Have you ever felt trapped, when the need to trust God became more real to you? Maybe you’re experiencing that now. What steps could you take to move closer to God in these difficult situations?
5. In Exodus 14:10-16, Moses and the people cried out to the Lord. God heard them, but then told them to get moving. What does this teach you about faith?

Exodus 14:10-16

6. What’s the difference between wanting God to respond to your plan and you following God’s plan? Which do you tend to do?
7. How does what Jesus experienced (and who He is) provide hope in what look to be impossible situations?
8. Because the Bible is God’s Word to us, how is He leading you to respond?
Digging Deeper
Read Hebrews 11:30 and Joshua 6.

Hebrews 11:30

Joshua 6:1-27

a) Write out a summary of the fall of Jericho.
b) What was Joshua’s role? Can you relate to what he must have been experiencing? If so, how?
c) The Israelites took several steps of faith. What were they? How do you think they knew that’s what God wanted them to do?
d) What’s one major truth from this story?
e) How can you apply this truth to your life?
Soul Training
Who needs to hear the story of how the Israelites trusted God? Pray and ask God for an opportunity to share what you’re learning.
Memory Verse
Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible." Matthew 19:26 NLT
Prepare for Next Sunday
Sunday, August 23, we’ll continue the series Believing God, by taking a closer look at Rahab. To prepare read Joshua 2 and Hebrews 11:31.

Hebrews 11:31
