Joshua series - wk1

Joshua series - wk1

In our NEW series we journey through some of the stories of God in the Old Testament Book of Joshua. God’s call to his people back then to join him in movement toward the promised land has great principles and insights for our journey of following God today. We’re to be ‘strong and courageous’ as we follow him whole-heartedly into the adventures awaiting us.

What are some of your fears? Or name some fears that people face?
Fear is an experience all humans share. We even call battling your fears, “facing your fears”. As we begin our look into the God stories within the Book of Joshua, we see the FEAR that faces the nation of Israel and the main character: Joshua. We’ll see how God calls Joshua and the people to move forward through those fears with God leading them forward.
God calls & commissions Joshua – and he calls & commissions each of us still today. God has a mission for us – a future he’s calling us into. (see Ephesians 2:10)
Fearful tensions of the future existed; many Israelites might have secretly preferred to stay admiring the promised land from the safety of Transjordan life, rather than risking actually entering Canaan. The temptation to remain within a ‘comfort zone’ also seduces Christians today.

*we choose which we'll be...
Joshua was to lead the people to live on mission following God’s plans – and we’re to follow Jesus, GOING FORWARD ON MISSION. That’s our unique identity: God’s people – living on mission. (active agents for God & His good in this world.)
WE GO FORWARD FAITHFULLY. God has given us His Word to lead us in the best possible way to live and find His Will – how to navigate living and experience true life! Trust God and His leading more than anything and anyone else.
We go forward with God’s presence. We can be strong and courageous as we move forward following God's lead. Without God’s presence: Joshua has everything to FEAR. But with God’s presence: we need to fear nothing.
Quote:
“The truly good news is that God is not a distant God, a God to be feared and avoided, a God of revenge, but a God who is moved by our pains, fears and participates in the fullness of the human struggle. The miraculous cures in the gospels are hopeful and joyful reminders of this good news, which is our true consolation and comfort.” - Henry Nouwen, Compassion
