How Are You Going to Live?
1 Thessalonians 2:11-20
Pastor Jerry Koller
In the ancient world, the father was the one who was responsible for the moral instruction of his children.
· He was responsible to teach them right from wrong.
· He was responsible for their socialization, teaching them how to interact and get along with others not only in the home but in society as well.
· The goal of his instruction is to live lives that are worthy of God’s calling for He has called them into His kingdom and glory (vs. 12).
Worthy comes from a word that has to do with “bringing into equilibrium or balance,” like the balance of a scale.
Paul is stating that the life we live must be in balance, in harmony, with the calling with which we have been called.
· The word calling comes from a word that means invitation (divine invitation) or vocation.
· The word translated called is a very common word that simply means “to call.” In this case, it includes the idea of being called to a vocation, or purpose, or mission.
The caller is God The called are Christians.
Our calling sets the standard for our conduct.
At this time in the life of the early church, Scripture was passed verbally, or by letter from church to church.
· Paul and his team delivered the word of God verbally to the Thessalonians. And when they heard it, they accepted it as the word of God, not as the word of men.
· It was a living word for it was at work in them.
The saints were living according to their calling.
This fourth and final “you know” in chapter two points back to the first “you know” found in verse 1.
When the Team was living among them, they dealt with each of them as a father deals with his own children.
· Paul took great joy is witnessing how the saints at Thessalonica were growing up spiritually which is one of the reasons why he missed being with them.
The saints were Paul’s glory and joy.
APPLICATION
Today’s Scripture offers us some important considerations.
Consideration #1—The Received Word Will Change You (vs. 13)
· I want you to consider this statement because one of the changes that continues to develop within the Evangelical Church—which includes our local church—deals with Scripture, with the Bible, and how it is perceived, received, and applied.
What is your take on Scripture?
· If you view it as the divinely inspired word of God, how should that affect how you live?
· Should you consider getting to know what it says?
· Should you consider following it?
· Should you consider making it an important part of your life like food, water, and sleep?
Consideration #2—Imitate Christ and Apprentice Others
· If you do not allow the word of God to be a lamp for our feet and a light for our path (Psalm 119:105), it will be extremely hard to be imitators of Christ.
This consideration moves from you to others.
· Are you encouraging others to follow you as you follow Christ?
· Are you taking anyone under your wing and apprenticing them?
This apprenticeship includes teaching them—by word and deed—how they can apprentice others...who will apprentice others… and so on..
