Colossians 1:10-14
Pastor Jerry Koller
Colossians 1:10-14
Pastor Jerry Koller
Some people feel God is impossible to please. Typically, these are people who often struggle or are struggling in their faith as a result of some kind of trial or adversity they are either facing in the present or have faced in the past that have resulted in either loss, pain, suffering, or a combination of the three.
Bearing Fruit—Assuming what follows the colon in verse 10 is an expansion of what proceeded it—living a life that is worthy of the Lord and pleasing to Him—the first example of what pleases God is bearing fruit in every good work.
· The verb “bearing” is in the present tense which means we are to continually bear fruit.
· Those who are in Christ are perennial fruit bearers.
· The verb “bearing” is in the present tense which means we are to continually bear fruit.
· Those who are in Christ are perennial fruit bearers.
But exactly what is fruit?
· While Scripture does not use these exact words, I think it implies that fruit is connected to God’s glory.
Bearing fruit is bringing glory to God.
· While Scripture does not use these exact words, I think it implies that fruit is connected to God’s glory.
Bearing fruit is bringing glory to God.
We are to bear fruit in every good work.
· This does not mean we can work our way into God’s favor.
· This does not mean we can work our way into God’s favor.
Good works was a common phrase Paul used in his letters.
Ephesians 2:10 also tells us that good works are started and carried out in our lives by God.
· We were created in Christ Jesus to do good works and God will make sure we continue doing so.
· Good works spring from the faith, hope and love the saints have as Paul pointed out in verses 3-6 of Colossians 1.
· Good works spring from the faith, hope and love the saints have as Paul pointed out in verses 3-6 of Colossians 1.
Good works is a general comprehensive term that refers to godly behavior—of literally doing what is good according to God’s standards.
Growing in Knowledge—A life that is worthy of the Lord, included growing in the knowledge of God (vs. 10).
· This is a comprehensive knowledge that includes who God is, what He has done—is doing—and will do.
· If we are to do all for the glory of God, how can we not grow in the knowledge of God so that we can know what brings Him glory?
· If we are to bear fruit in every good work, how can we not grow in the knowledge of God so that we can bear fruit according to His design?
· If we want our love of God to deepen, how can we not grow in the knowledge of God?
· This is a comprehensive knowledge that includes who God is, what He has done—is doing—and will do.
· If we are to do all for the glory of God, how can we not grow in the knowledge of God so that we can know what brings Him glory?
· If we are to bear fruit in every good work, how can we not grow in the knowledge of God so that we can bear fruit according to His design?
· If we want our love of God to deepen, how can we not grow in the knowledge of God?
Being Strengthened with the Power of His Might—Verse 11 gives us one more way we can know we are living a life worthy of the Lord, a life that pleases Him in every way: being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might (vs. 11).
The words strengthened and power come from the same root word (dunamis).
· You can also translate this statement in this fashion: We are being empowered with all power.
· You can also translate this statement in this fashion: We are being empowered with all power.
The word power here comes from the same root as the words strengthened and power in Colossians 1:11.
The Holy Spirit is the power of God in action
· This empowering with power is according to His glorious might.
· This can also be translated according to the might or the power of His glory.
· This power has an intended outcome: God’s glory.
· This can also be translated according to the might or the power of His glory.
· This power has an intended outcome: God’s glory.
We are also empowered so that you may have great endurance and patience (vs. 11)
Endurance is the ability to withstand hardships.
Patience comes from a word that is used in regard to divine forbearance.
· Forbearance means to delay enforcing rights, claims, or privileges. It refrains from acting even though it could.
· Forbearance means to delay enforcing rights, claims, or privileges. It refrains from acting even though it could.
The Holy Spirit develops this in us.
God empowers us with power so that these qualities may be developed in us in order that we may keep on keeping on joyfully giving thanks to the Father (vs. 12).
It is God who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. (vs. 12)
It is He who has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves (vs. 13)
Because we are in the Son—in Christ—we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (vs. 14)
APPLICATION
God is not a tyrannical taskmaster who is impossible to please.
He is a righteous, holy, loving God who has exhibited His glory through His Son who sought us and bought us with His redeeming love, taking us out of the kingdom of darkness and has placed us into the kingdom of light so that we may enjoy Him forever.
In so doing, His glory will be displayed through us.
Happy Birthday!
