Exodus 17:8-16

“Question Everything: God of War or God of Peace?”

Israel Defeats Amalek ~ Exodus 17:8-16

Psalm 11:5 The LORD tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.

Proverbs 6:16 There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood…

How do we approach these texts:
1) Reading Actively Rather than Passively
2) Questioning Rather than Just Listening
3) Ethically Critiquing, Rather than Uncritically Approving, Violent Texts

Three Guidelines for Engaging in an Ethical Critique
1) The Rule of Love: Reading for the Love of God and Others
2) A Commitment to Justice: Setting Things Right
3) A Consistent Ethic of Life: Valuing All People

How can we respond:
1)Press into the Scriptures
2)Be a peacemaker
3)Stand up to injustice
4)Appreciate a God who is uniquely just

Psalm 51:1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
