James

The Most Dangerous Fire Starter Of All Time

The Most Dangerous Fire Starter Of All Time

As we crack open James 3 today, the big idea is that Words can start fires. If we don’t give Jesus LORDSHIP over our heart and mouth, our small words and cause great damage.

Whoever said “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me” was either a liar or in denial! The greatest wounds that we have are wounds of careless and hurtful words.
The POWER TO DIRECT

James presents to us two items that are small in themselves, yet exercise great directive power, just like the tongue. Both the bit and the rudder must overcome contrary forces - always bigger than themselves. The bit must overcome the wild nature of the horse, and the rudder must fight the winds and currents that would drive the ship off its course.
The POWER TO DESTROY

James gives us two additional analogies: fire and restless evil that is poisonous.

The POWER TO DELIGHT

A spring of water and a fruit tree are the last positive examples. They have power to nourish and bless.
We have six different analogies for understanding the power behind our words:

bit
rudder
fire
poisonous evil
spring
fruit tree
"Both the bit and the rudder - our tongue - must be under the control of a strong hand. The expert horseman keeps the mighty power of his steed under control, and the experienced pilot courageously steers the ship through the storm. When Jesus Christ controls the tongue, we don't need to fear saying the wrong things—or even saying the right things in a wrong way! When Jesus Christ is the Lord of the heart, then He is Lord of the lips too.” - Warren Wiersbe
Next Steps:

1. Are your words creating destruction or delight? Do people seek you out, asking for positive, refreshing water and words?

2. Share a word of blessing, gratitude, appreciation. Who day you need to say “I thank God for you” or “I appreciate you” or “Thank you”?

3. Share a word of love. Who do you need to say "I love you" to?

4. Share a word of apology. Who do you need to say "I’m sorry" to?

5. Share a word of forgiveness. Who do you need to say “I forgive you” to?

Give and Support Our Ministry

"The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (ESV)
