Greetings Longview Christian Church,
Our staff and elders have been meeting in various formats over the past few days in light of Governor Abbott’s decision to not extend the shelter in place order into May. This decision has set a number of things in motion within the state to plot a course for enhanced social and business interactions in phases.
During phase 1, by the wording, houses of worship are still advised to do as many “services” remotely as possible, and when meeting, do as much to honor the guidelines put forth by the CDC for social distancing. Troy, Kathe, and Blake will all speak directly to how this will play out with Adult, Children’s, and Youth discipleship opportunities, but as it pertains to our regular Sunday Morning Worship services, we feel it would be best to wait until our state moves into phase 2 allowing for a higher occupancy for gatherings.
We have several reasons for wanting to take a measured approach, here are a few:
We are very sensitive about the risk to our staff, volunteers, and attendees. Covid-19 cases in Longview are actually still increasing. “Opening the doors” too soon could put people unnecessarily in danger out of a sense obligation—we don’t want to do that!
We would hate to turn people away. Restaurants and theaters are being allowed to open with 25% occupancy. If we follow that as a guide, that would only be about 50 people in a worship service. Coordinating overflow people to the big room or preventing them from entering is a negative experience we want to avoid.
When we gather together again, we want to be able to produce content at a high level for our people who are still advised to stay home and who choose to stay home. We are working on a couple of technical issues standing in the way of doing a fully streamed live, engaging service with people in the room. We hope to have these limitations dealt with in the next couple of weeks.
As I mentioned, our staff will begin to reach out with opportunities and suggestions for getting together in person over the next few days. They might be right for some and not others. We ask that you continue to be wise with your participation and pray in earnest for the Church as we all continue our journey forward together.
Blessings,
Mike Skelton
