The Greek word Jesus uses for “church,” ekklesia, carries the meaning of two distinct words: ek mean- ing “out” and kaleo meaning “to call.” The image was of people being called out of their homes into the marketplace. These disciples—called out from sin and called out to new life—are going to form the foundation of the Church.
