Misplaced Loyalties
2 Samuel 18-19
Philippians 2:3-11

Unhealthy Loyalty vs. Healthy Loyalty

Through the life of King David we see a consistent trend as we read the scriptures. We see his loyalty to others when its undeserving and his loyalty to God.

King David’s loyalty to God was a dominant characteristic he possessed

When we are loyal to God first with all of our mind, all of our body and all of our soul, everything in our life balances itself out.

Jesus’ ministry on earth was rested on his true loyalty to God and to man as well

Loyalty begins with our allegiance or commitment

2 Chronicles 16:9 “ For the eyes of the Lord are looking and seeking throughout the earth to strengthen this whose hearts are loyal and fully committed to him”

1 Samuel 17:37
And David said, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the LORD be with you!”

We receive a great deal of confidence knowing we will receive what Christ has already promised

Hebrews 10:36
“For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised”

2 Samuel 12:13
David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” And Nathan said to David, “The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.”

Psalm 51:1-2
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love;
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
and cleanse me from my sin!

2 Samuel 18:31-33 And behold, the Cushite came, and the Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king! For the LORD has delivered you this day from the hand of all who rose up against you.” 32 The king said to the Cushite, “Is it well with the young man Absalom?” And the Cushite answered, “May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up against you for evil be like that young man.”33 And the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said, “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”

Being Loyal to God is being loyal to others.

Philippians 2:3-11
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

LESSONS OF LOYALTY
Loyalty will involve sacrifice
Loyalty to god will be rewarded

Hebrews 10:35-37 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay;
