>Some people collect stuff in life that they really have no idea how to get rid of.
>Some people ask for help, but then fight to hold on to the things they want to get rid of.
> There's a part of people that really genuinely wants to get out of their junk, and then there's another part of them that really wants to hold on to it!
The apostle Paul described himself like this in:
Romans 7:15-19
"For I do not understand my own actions...I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate... For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing."
Note: Often times the very people who cry out for help, end up turning on you when you try to help! (If you haven't noticed, people don't give up their junk easily!)
T.D Jakes once said: "There are a lot of people who say they are committed to change, but they haven't stopped having an affair yet with their junk."
Proverbs 26:11 (NIV)
"As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly."
You don't have to stay living in your junk!
The Bible tells us in:
Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Jesus said in:
John 8:36 (NIV)
"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
No matter what you've been through, or what you are experiencing right now, it is your RIGHT as a follower of Jesus Christ to walk in total and complete freedom!
Well, If it's my right, then why aren't I free?
We don't understand what a "right" is!
By definition, a right is: The privilege, power, liberty, license and freedom to do.
When Jesus rose from the grave, he didn't hand anyone freedom! What he did was unlock the doors to freedom, so that we could go get it.
(Freedom has to be possessed!)
The apostle Paul reiterates this exact truth in:
Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)
"Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
Psalms 119:32 says,
"I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free."
The truth is- Freedom is never going to show up in your life, until you are committed to running after it!
The Lord may have set the Israelites free from bondage in Egypt, but they still had to pack up their bags and choose to walk out of it!
Today I want to talk to you about 3 things we are going to have to do, if we want to get the junk out of our trunk:
(1)Claim it!
We usually Ignore it, Deny it, Run from it, Rationalize it, and Blame it on someone else. We rarely ever speak up and claim it!
The Apostle Paul however took total ownership of his own junk in:
Romans 7:18-24
"For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[a] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out... 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?"
- If you find yourself needing to control people and situations almost everywhere that you go, in order to feel comfortable, You have got some junk in your trunk!
- If you can't seem to sustain any healthy, long-term relationships in your life, outside of the family that has to put up with you, You have got some junk in your trunk!
- If you are living a life that is constantly manipulating, deceiving and using other people to get what you want, You have got some junk in your trunk!
- If you are living a second secret life where you are constantly trying to hide your private addictions and cover up your tracks, You have got some junk in the trunk!
- If the people who are closest to you live in fear that your temper may blow and either cutting words or abuse may follow, You have got some junk in your trunk!
- If you find your thoughts, actions and investments constantly constantly obsessing over your image and reputation, You have got some junk in your trunk!
- The worst part is, when you get too much junk in your trunk, everybody has to start handling you with kid gloves (Its like you need a police escort with wide load signs), because your issues keep spilling over into everyone else's lane!!!
If you want to get the junk out of your trunk, then you have got to claim it!
(2) Confess it!
King David wisely took his issues to God and confessed them in:
Psalm 32:5 (NIV)
"Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions before the Lord" and you forgave the guilt of my sin."
As soon as David confessed his sin, God removed the junk from his trunk!
God wants you to be free, even more than you want to be free!
2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV)
"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."
If you want to get the junk out of your trunk, then you have got to confess it!
(3) Walk away from it!
Luke teaches us in:
Acts 3:19 (NIV)
"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord."
Def: The word Repent comes from the Gr. word Metanoia and means: To turn from sin, and change ones mind!
The biblical definition is: A change of mind that results in a change of action!
Romans 6:1-2 (NIV)
"What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?"
If you want to keep the junk out of your trunk, then you have to walk away from it!
