The unfolding of God's plan often takes surprising routes. The intriguing paradox is that a flawless God chooses to use imperfect individuals to achieve His purposes. In the story of Samuel anointing David, we witness a game-changing moment that required innovation and obedience to come to fruition. Embracing innovation while pursuing the Lord’s purposes carries deep and eternal value.

When Samuel was sent to appoint the future king among Jesse’s sons, he encountered a selection of young men who seemingly possessed the qualities of a king. Their strength and intelligence made it seem likely that the Lord’s choice would be found among them. However, the one that God had chosen was absent in this line-up! Jesse had another son, David. God's ways transcend our own; they are higher and often require us to think beyond the ordinary. This truth was evident as the Lord revealed to Samuel that David was destined to be the future king of Israel.

What if Samuel refused to embrace innovation? Had he dismissed the prompting from God and chosen to anoint someone who seemed more conventionally qualified, David’s destiny as king might have remained unfulfilled. Despite being overlooked by others, this young shepherd possessed qualities that aligned with both God’s vision and the divine design purposed over his life. Samuel’s openness to God’s redirection marked David for the rest of his life.

Likewise, in our own lives, God may call us to take innovative steps that defy convention. It takes courage to trust God's unconventional leading and act in obedience, just as Samuel did.

While innovation is important, developing the discipline of awareness is also crucial in encountering God during game-changing moments. If we lack awareness and are not available to the voice of the Lord, it is increasingly easy to miss His promptings. May the Lord teach us to better anticipate Him in every moment. Spend time seeking the Lord and asking Him to increase your capacity to be both present and innovative in every situation.
