Wisdom Is CallingSample
Wisdom’s Target Audience
In this passage, wisdom is speaking, and she immediately identifies the people she is addressing. She speaks directly to three categories of people:
· Everyone. Wisdom is for all people, regardless of gender, race, nationality, or social class. Every single person needs wisdom, and nobody is excluded from receiving her.
· The simple. Wisdom offers prudence—foresight, common sense—to the simple. Simple people are naïve and gullible. They are vulnerable, unstable, and prone to fall into traps. Though some people are totally gullible and naïve, all of us are vulnerable to Satan’s traps in some way. With wisdom comes the shrewdness to recognize those traps.
· The foolish. Wisdom offers understanding to the foolish. In Proverbs, fools are identified as people who have no fear of God and live openly and carelessly in sinful disobedience to His laws and commands. Notice this distinction between the simple person and the foolish: simple people have a head problem, and foolish people have a heart problem. Wisdom offers a heart transplant for fools: if they truly seek to live wisely, she will give them an understanding heart.
The way of wisdom offers not only a better destination—heaven—but also a better journey. It is certainly not an easy road, but it is a safe and joyous one. If we choose the road of wisdom, God promises to give us victory as we walk through the painful moments and phases of this life. We will never travel alone but in glorious fellowship with other believers and with Christ, who blazed the trail and promised to be with us all the way. The way of wisdom is not only the road that leads to life, but it is the road of life—life that begins when you take the first step onto it. The journey on earth is joyous, and the destination of living with God eternally will be even better!
