Why Would I Allow The Bible To Be Authoritative In My Life?

As Christians, we allow the Bible to be authoritative in our lives.
It shapes our worldview, morals, values and we allow it to challenge our thoughts, feelings and beliefs.

---

Where does the Bible come from?

Matthew 28:16-20
16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

The Bible is how Jesus' authority over me is communicated to me.

Why would I allow the Bible to be authoritative in my life?
Because I want Jesus to be authoritative over my life and I believe this is the primary means by which he does this.

---

How do I get to the place where I want Jesus to be authoritative over my life?

Matthew 7:7
Seek and you will find.

---

How can I trust that the Bible we have today is like the original?

Thousands of manuscript copies
Earliest copies are close to the date of the original
Copying errors are few and insignificant
None of the debated differences are around doctrinal issues

We have every reason to believe that the message the original authors intended to convey to us has not been lost or altered.

---

How were the books in the Bible chosen?

Think of the books as having been recognized as authoritative rather than chosen as authoritative.

---

Why include the Old Testament?

Because Jesus treated them as authoritative.

Old Testament has 39 books
Jesus quoted 24 of them
Other New Testament writers quoted from 10 more
Only 5 aren't quoted

Luke 24:27
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

You can't understand Jesus without the Old Testament.

---

Who wrote it? How do we talk about who wrote it?

The Bible records for us that humans wrote it.
Exodus 17:14
Luke 1:1-4
Mark, Matthew and Luke tell the same stories but arrange them differently depending on what they are wanting to teach.
Romans 16:21-22... gives us a picture of Paul and his entourage as being the creators of this letter.

And yet, there is a supernatural authority to it that millions of people would testify about.

Paul said it best when he said that the scriptures are "God breathed."
2 Timothy 3:16-17
