The Fall of Jerusalem
2Ki 25:1–12; Jer 52:4–16
1In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it. # 2Ki 25:1; Jer 52:4–7; Eze 24:1–2 2In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city wall was broken up. 3All the officials of the king of Babylon entered and sat in the Middle Gate: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-Nebo, Sarsechim the Rabsaris, # 39:3 Possibly Chief of Staff. Nergal-sharezer the Rabmag, # 39:3 Possibly the high official. and all the rest of the officials of the king of Babylon. # Jer 21:4; 38:17 4When Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them and all the men of war, then they fled # Am 2:14 and went out of the city by night, by way of the king’s garden, by the gate between the two walls. # 2Ch 32:5 And he went out the way of the Arabah.
5But the Chaldeans’ army pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. # Jos 5:10 And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath, # 2Ki 23:33 where he passed sentence on him. 6Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes. # Dt 28:34 Moreover, the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah. # Jer 52:10 7He also put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him with chains to carry him to Babylon. # Jdg 16:21; Eze 12:13
8The Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the houses of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem. # Ne 1:3; Jer 21:10 9Then Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard # Ge 37:36; Jer 40:1 carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people who remained in the city, and those who fell away, who fell to him, with the rest of the people who remained. 10But Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard left behind in the land of Judah the poor people who had nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at that time. # 2Ki 25:12; Jer 40:7
The Lord Delivers Jeremiah
11Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, # Jer 15:21; Ac 24:23 saying, 12“Take him and look after him, and do not harm him. But do to him just as he says to you.” # Ps 105:14–15; Pr 16:7 13So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, Nebushazban the Rabsaris, Nergal-sharezer the Rabmag, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon # Jer 39:3 14sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison # Jer 38:28 and committed him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, # 2Ki 22:12 that he should take him home. So he lived among the people.
15Now the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying: 16Go and speak to Ebed-melek the Cushite, saying: Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will fulfill My words against this city for harm and not for good. And they shall be accomplished in that day before you. # Da 9:12; Zec 1:6 17But I will deliver you in that day, says the Lord, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid. # Ps 41:1–2; 50:15 18For I will surely deliver you, and you will not fall by the sword, but your life will be as plunder to you, # Jer 21:9; 38:2 because you have put your trust in Me, says the Lord.
