Als David und die Israeliten nach dem Sieg über die Philister zurückkehrten, zogen Frauen aus allen Städten König Saul entgegen. Sie sangen und tanzten, schlugen die Tamburine und empfingen die Sieger mit Jubel und Musik. Immer wieder sangen die Frauen den Vers: »Saul hat tausend Mann erschlagen, David aber zehntausend!« Saul hörte dieses Lied nicht gern, er wurde sehr zornig. »David trauen sie zu, dass er zehntausend erschlägt; und sie glauben, dass ich nur mit tausend fertigwerde!«, dachte er voller Missmut. »Jetzt fehlt nur noch, dass sie ihn zum König machen!« Seitdem war Saul eifersüchtig auf David.
