Na počátku bylo Slovo a to Slovo bylo u Boha a to Slovo bylo Bůh. To bylo na počátku u Boha. Všechno povstalo skrze něj a bez něj nepovstalo nic, co je. V něm byl život a ten život byl světlem lidí. A to světlo svítí ve tmě a tma je nepohltila. Od Boha byl poslán člověk jménem Jan. Přišel kvůli svědectví, svědčit o tom Světle, aby všichni uvěřili skrze něj. On nebyl to Světlo, ale přišel, aby o Světle vydal svědectví. Tento byl to pravé Světlo osvěcující každého člověka přicházejícího na svět: Byl na světě a svět povstal skrze něj, ale svět ho nepoznal. Přišel do svého vlastního, ale jeho vlastní ho nepřijali. Ale těm, kteří ho přijali, dal právo být Božími dětmi – všem těm, kdo věří v jeho jméno. Takoví nejsou narozeni z krve, ani z vůle těla, ani z vůle muže, ale z Boha. To Slovo se stalo tělem a přišlo žít mezi nás. Spatřili jsme jeho slávu, slávu, jakou má od Otce jednorozený Syn, plný milosti a pravdy. Jan o něm vydával svědectví a volal: „Toto je ten, o němž jsem řekl: Ten, který přichází za mnou, je přede mnou, neboť byl dříve než já.“

Kristus existoval od věčnosti, byl stále s Bohem Otcem a byl to Bůh sám. On byl tvořícím Božím Slovem, kterým vše vzniklo a trvá. Je zdrojem všeho života a pro lidi světlem na cestě k Bohu. To světlo přemáhá temnotu světa, ale ta ho nikdy nepřekoná. Bůh pověřil muže, který se jmenoval Jan (zvaný Křtitel), aby svědčil o Ježíši a vedl lidi k víře, že Ježíš je tím světlem. Jan nikdy ani nenaznačil, že by jím byl on sám. Ježíš je to pravé světlo, které září vstříc každému člověku. Přišel na zem, kterou stvořil a k lidem, které miloval, ale oni ho nepřijali. Těm však, kteří ho přece přijali a uvěřili v něho, otevřel přístup do Boží rodiny. Nestali se jejími členy rodem ani lidským úsilím, ale Božím působením. A věčné Slovo se stalo člověkem, který žil mezi námi. Viděli jsme jeho vznešenost, vznešenost vlastní jedinému Božímu Synu. Poznali jsme jej plného lásky a pravdy. Také Jan Křtitel o něm vydával jasné svědectví: „To je ten, který jde sice za mnou, ale je mnohem významnější a byl dávno přede mnou.“

Na počátku bylo Slovo, a to Slovo bylo u Boha, a to Slovo byl Bůh. To bylo na počátku u Boha. Všecky věci skrze ně učiněny jsou, a bez něho nic není učiněno, což učiněno jest. V něm život byl, a život byl světlo lidí. A to Světlo v temnostech svítí, ale tmy ho neobsáhly. Byl člověk poslaný od Boha, jemuž jméno bylo Jan. Ten přišel na svědectví, aby svědčil o tom Světle, aby všickni uvěřili skrze něho. Nebyl on to Světlo, ale poslán byl, aby svědectví vydával o tom Světle. Tenť byl to pravé Světlo, jenž osvěcuje každého člověka přicházejícího na svět. Na světě byl, a svět skrze něho učiněn jest, a svět ho nepoznal. Do svého vlastního přišel, a vlastní jeho nepřijali ho. Kteříž pak koli přijali jej, dal jim moc syny Božími býti, totiž těm, kteříž věří ve jméno jeho, Kteřížto ne ze krví, ani z vůle těla, ani z vůle muže, ale z Boha zplozeni jsou. A Slovo to tělo učiněno jest, a přebývalo mezi námi, (a viděli jsme slávu jeho, slávu jakožto jednorozeného od Otce,) plné milosti a pravdy. Jan svědectví vydával o něm, a volal, řka: Tentoť jest, o němž jsem pravil, že po mně přišed, předšel mne; nebo přednější jest nežli já.
