Baptism of Jesus

John the Baptist knew his mission in life. God gave him the responsibility to prepare people for the coming of the Messiah by turning away from sin and by being baptized as a symbol of repentance. When asked if he was the Messiah, John responded that he was not worthy to be the Messiah's slave and untie the straps of his sandals. Jesus traveled from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. As John baptized Jesus, the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove.
