FCA Outdoors: Devotions

DAY 4 OF 14

UNHINDERED

by Paul Dennis

"Therefore, since we have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us." — Hebrews 12:1

Ready: Big Game and competitive archers know the importance of using the right veins or fletching on their arrows. Modern veins are designed for optimal flight, ensuring arrows go straight, fast, and far. However, “flu flu” fletching—fluffy feathers instead of streamlined veins—is used for close-range shots, like shooting at flying targets, as it allows the arrow to fly true only briefly before resistance pulls it down. The Christian life is a long-distance race; we are created by God to go the full distance. Yet, many start with enthusiasm but lose momentum quickly. Scripture encourages us to cast off anything—weight or sin—that holds us back from living a life of victorious faith, just as a hiker lightens his pack or a runner sheds extra clothing.

Aim: Hebrews 12:1

Fire: Hindrances can include past events, negative comments, or uncontrollable circumstances. Reflect on the obstacles in your life that need to be set aside to keep moving forward in faith. Scripture also warns of sin that trips us up—sin that we haven’t turned from hinders us from finishing the course. Take this moment to repent and refocus on Jesus, pressing forward in a life of victorious faith.

Follow-Through: Philippians 3:12-14, Hebrews 12:2-3
