DAY 13 OF 21

Genesis 27:5–10

Rebekah and Jacob knew Abraham’s blessing was to be passed on to not Esau, but Jacob. In fact, Esau had already sold his birthright to his brother. Their father, Isaac, apparently didn’t know about the transaction or else refused to recognize it; nor did he acknowledge God’s prophecy given years before to Rebekah that predicted Jacob as the heir (see Genesis 25:23). This put Rebekah and Jacob in quite a predicament: Would they trust God to work out his plan or take matters into their own hands? Rebekah decided on the latter and helped her favorite son deceive her husband. She used deceit to bring about something God had already promised would happen! It was a decision that would have harsh consequences.
