Stage 4: Humbling Yourself
Have you tried to change into a “better” version of yourself and found the experience downright frustrating and self-condemning? When change is determined by you and is completely riding on you, it’s too much responsibility for any one person to bear.
When we find ourselves in a painful mud-pit moment, God’s grace makes it possible for us to come to ourselves, which I define as the ability to step outside ourselves so we can see who we are and what we’ve done without feeling condemned. At the same time, it enables us to be mindful of the choices we’ve made and take personal responsibility for them.
Real transformation begins and is sustained through ongoing godly humility. This humility comes from God, not us, and it leads us to repentance. In godly humility, we relinquish control of our lives and the meaning we’ve given our pain.
When we’re stuck in a cycle of pain, there are two routes we can take. In one direction, we may grasp onto our pain like a security blanket or, even worse, make it part of our identity. Or we can draw on God’s common grace so that we learn how to express our feelings constructively and develop good coping skills.
People who live through hard things often have difficulty asking for help. Once upon a time when they needed help, nobody came. The first thing a hurting person needs is to know they are not alone.
The salvation Christ provides makes your foundation secure. That foundation is strengthened and built as you go to Him in prayer, with thankfulness, and ask for His help.Knowing you need help isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s essential for more of God’s power to get in.
In Christ, you are never a failure! When life feels hard or appears bad, put no confidence in what you see. Help is on the way! God doesn’t expect you to pass every test with flying colors, but He does expect you to learn from your failures.
When you live stuck in survival mode, it’s hard to trust your heavenly Father and other people. You think no one has your back, no one loves you, and most certainly no one can do anything as good for you as you can do for yourself. You believe the lie that you can’t let your guard down or take a day off.
Children of God don’t work for rest; they work from rest. Without rest, you will continue to transfer your pain from one form of destructive energy to the next. Purposefully look for restful moments to mindfully connect yourself back to God, the source of all life!
