Ten Massive Leadership Questions

DAY 8 OF 10

What are my metaphors?

Who is the greatest teacher of all time? I’d say, Jesus. Since He gave His life for us and saved us, I may be biased, but I don’t think so. Data speaks louder than, well, bias. What is the top seller book of all time? The Bible, of course. It is Jesus’s book. What religion claims the most followers worldwide? Yep, Christianity. That is Jesus’s followers. So, I think it is safe to say Jesus is the best teacher ever. And how did Jesus teach? He taught mostly using parables and stories. That is insightful. Now, parables are types of metaphors. Jesus used metaphors. So should you.

Metaphors convey truths in easy-to-understand ways. They help us remember truths easily. Do you remember the parable of the Sower? My point exactly! As a leader, you need to give your people metaphors to help them remember and transfer truths that are essential to their spirituality and your organization. I remember when I was challenged with this concept many years ago. After much prayer, I settled on a metaphor for our church from a picture found in Ezekiel 47. Our church is like a river flowing from the sanctuary and everywhere we go, we bring life. Feel free to use that one if it works for you, but your metaphors may be different depending on what God is doing in and through you.
