Holy Week - a Reflection

DAY 4 OF 7

Broken and washed...for you.

It is Thursday. Jesus has come back to Jerusalem, and the full weight of what is going to happen to Him is heavy on His heart. Betrayal is imminent. Abandonment is around the corner. Crushing pain and torture are just hours away. And yet, Jesus chooses to respond with extravagant, humble love.

Friend, think about that truth. Jesus is about to take all of our sin on His perfect life, and instead of giving all of us what we actually deserve, He gives us what we don’t deserve—GRACE! In the face of the worst of all of us, Jesus responds with the “full extent of His love”!

The Bible says:

“Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power and that He had come from God and was returning to God; so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around His waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.” (John 13:1b-5, NIV)

What humility and servanthood! This is a true miracle…the Creator washing the feet of His created. And Jesus is not finished!!

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, ‘Take and eat; this is My body.’ Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” (Matthew 26:26-28, NIV)

What an exchange! His broken body for our sin. His blood for our salvation.

This would be a tremendous moment for you to take communion. Right now, I’d encourage you to grab a small piece of bread and some wine or juice. When you have these precious symbols, take a moment and express your gratitude to Jesus. Thank Jesus for His broken body and His blood that was spilled. Now, receive the elements with joy, praise, and hope!

As we reflect on the love of Jesus today, how could we participate in the miracle of servanthood that Jesus displayed? Whose feet could you wash today in an act of selfless love? You don’t actually need to wash someone’s feet (but you could!). You could also bring someone a meal, tell someone the extent of your love for him/her, or even write a note of encouragement.

This is Holy Thursday. Jesus is ready to go to the Garden of Gethsemane. He is ready to bring to us the miracle of salvation!

Believing for your miracle today!
