40 Days With the Risen Lord

DAY 19 OF 40

The Disciples Reflect on the Last Meal

A Story

"I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand." The pastor stood looking at the young woman with not long to live, not knowing quite what to say. The young woman explained."My grandmother once told me this story, and from there on out , I have always done so. I have also always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending church socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork.’ It was my favourite part because I knew that something better was coming, like a velvety chocolate cake or deep dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance! So I want people to see me in the casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder, 'What's with the fork?' Then I want you to tell them: 'Keep your fork... the best is yet to come:’"

The pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman goodbye. He knew this would be the last time he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She knew that something better was coming.

A Prayer

Ancient of Days, Loving Provider,

The bittersweet herbs at the table that night must have permeated every thought you had. When we come to your 'table' now, merciful Lord, we do not come trusting in our own righteousness, but in your many and great mercies. We are not worthy to gather up the crumbs under your table. We partake in remembrance of you and what you did for us at the cross. We break bread and then take the cup in remembrance of you, gracious Lord. By your death you have freed us from the slavery of sin, and reconciled us to yourself. We will praise you forever for ushering in the New Covenant by your bitter death and glorious resurrection. We praise you Lord saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty" because the best is yet to come. Amen.

Journal Exercise

Before we eat at the Lord’s table and drink his cup we must examine ourselves and change our lives. We must repent of our sins, love our neighbours and intend to lead a new life following God's Commands. Confess your sins humbly before God and outline where you need to change your life.

When Jesus spoke of a new covenant in his blood he spoke of forgiveness of sins by his death. Write a prayer calling upon God to assure us of forgiveness.

Write a prayer praising God over the prospect of joining Jesus at the heavenly banquet and rejoice with him that the best is yet to come.

An Acclamation

Christ has died!

Christ is risen!

Christ will come again!

A Mission Statement

Let us glorify God by proclaiming our saviour the Lord Jesus Christ in prayerful dependance on the Holy Spirit, so that everyone will hear his call to repent, trust and serve Christ in love, and be established in the fellowship of his disciples while they await his return.
