Learning How to Hear: A 6 Day Journey of Drowning Out the Noise and Hearing From Godনমুনা
Can You Hear It?
We can even ignore pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world. ― C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain
Some church history suggests that the Apostle John was twice boiled in oil and survived. After surviving John is sent into exile on the island of Patmos. It is on Patmos that John receives and writes the book of Revelation “…the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here…” (Rev 4:1)
John was experienced and familiar with the voice of God. It was that familiarity that allowed John to recognize and hear Jesus’ voice shout over his own pain and distress. So many of us are desperate to hear God’s voice in moments of difficulty. But God’s voice needs getting used to.
The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)
God’s voice first sings to us. The melody of His “LOVE” is “LOUD!” In the chorus of His love, God trains our ears to His voice. Your heartbeat gets accustomed to the frequency of His urgency, unction, and utterance. When you habitually bend your ear to Him every morning you will have no problem recognizing His voice in the darkness of evening. If you learn to dance when He sings and bend your life according to His guidance, you will have no trouble responding to His call in your pain.
Learn to daily follow, listen, and obey the “simple” whispers of God’s voice, for when we do, His voice will come like a trumpet in the moments of our difficulty.
Life Application: This week try to hear the Holy Spirit about the smallest things. Get familiar to His singing over you.
Prayer: Holy Spirit I’m sorry for ignoring You about the smallest things. Awaken my sensitivity to Your whispers.
