Proverbs 30:24-31 - Compare All Versions

Proverbs 30:24-31 NIV (New International Version)

“Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags; locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks; a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces. “There are three things that are stately in their stride, four that move with stately bearing: a lion, mighty among beasts, who retreats before nothing; a strutting rooster, a he-goat, and a king secure against revolt.

Proverbs 30:24-31 ESV (English Standard Version 2025)

Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces. Three things are stately in their tread; four are stately in their stride: the lion, which is mightiest among beasts and does not turn back before any; the strutting rooster, the he-goat, and a king whose army is with him.

Proverbs 30:24-31 NLT (New Living Translation)

There are four things on earth that are small but unusually wise: Ants—they aren’t strong, but they store up food all summer. Hyraxes—they aren’t powerful, but they make their homes among the rocks. Locusts—they have no king, but they march in formation. Lizards—they are easy to catch, but they are found even in kings’ palaces. There are three things that walk with stately stride— no, four that strut about: the lion, king of animals, who won’t turn aside for anything, the strutting rooster, the male goat, a king as he leads his army.

Proverbs 30:24-31 CSB (Christian Standard Bible)

Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: ants are not a strong people, yet they store up their food in the summer;  hyraxes are not a mighty people, yet they make their homes in the cliffs;  locusts have no king, yet all of them march in ranks;  a lizard  can be caught in your hands, yet it lives in kings’ palaces. Three things are stately in their stride; four are stately in their walk: a lion, which is mightiest among beasts and doesn’t retreat before anything; a strutting rooster;  a goat; and a king at the head of his army.

Proverbs 30:24-31 KJV (King James Version)

There be four things which are little upon the earth, But they are exceeding wise: The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their meat in the summer; The conies are but a feeble folk, Yet make they their houses in the rocks; The locusts have no king, Yet go they forth all of them by bands; The spider taketh hold with her hands, And is in kings' palaces. There be three things which go well, Yea, four are comely in going: A lion which is strongest among beasts, And turneth not away for any; An greyhound; an he goat also; And a king, against whom there is no rising up.

Proverbs 30:24-31 NKJV (New King James Version)

There are four things which are little on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise: The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare their food in the summer; The rock badgers are a feeble folk, Yet they make their homes in the crags; The locusts have no king, Yet they all advance in ranks; The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, And it is in kings’ palaces. There are three things which are majestic in pace, Yes, four which are stately in walk: A lion, which is mighty among beasts And does not turn away from any; A greyhound, A male goat also, And a king whose troops are with him.

Proverbs 30:24-31 MSG (The Message)

There are four small creatures, wisest of the wise they are— ants—frail as they are, get plenty of food in for the winter; marmots—vulnerable as they are, manage to arrange for rock-solid homes; locusts—leaderless insects, yet they strip the field like an army regiment; lizards—easy enough to catch, but they sneak past vigilant palace guards. There are three solemn dignitaries, four that are impressive in their bearing— a lion, king of the beasts, deferring to none; a rooster, proud and strutting; a billy goat; a head of state in stately procession. * * *

Proverbs 30:24-31 NASB2020 (New American Standard Bible - NASB)

¶Four things are small on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise: The ants are not a strong people, But they prepare their food in the summer; The rock hyraxes are not a mighty people, Yet they make their houses in the rocks; The locusts have no king, Yet all of them go out in ranks; The lizard you may grasp with the hands, Yet it is in kings’ palaces. ¶There are three things which are stately in their march, Even four which are stately when they walk: The lion, which is mighty among animals And does not retreat from anything, The strutting rooster or the male goat, And a king when his army is with him.

Proverbs 30:24-31 AMP (Amplified Bible)

¶There are four things that are small on the earth, But they are exceedingly wise: The ants are not a strong people, Yet they prepare their food in the summer; [Prov 6:6] The shephanim are not a mighty folk, Yet they make their houses in the rocks; [Ps 104:18] The locusts have no king, Yet all of them go out in groups; You may grasp the lizard with your hands, Yet it is in kings’ palaces. ¶There are three things which are stately in step, Even four which are stately in their stride: The lion, which is mighty among beasts And does not turn back before any; The strutting rooster, the male goat also, And the king when his army is with him.

Proverbs 30:24-31 NET (New English Translation)

There are four things on earth that are small, but they are exceedingly wise: ants are creatures with little strength, but they prepare their food in the summer; rock badgers are creatures with little power, but they make their homes in the crags; locusts have no king, but they all go forward by ranks; a lizard you can catch with the hand, but it gets into the palaces of the king. There are three things that are magnificent in their step, four things that move about magnificently: a lion, mightiest of the beasts, who does not retreat from anything; a strutting rooster, a male goat, and a king with his army around him.
