All these towns were assigned by lot to the Merarites, the remaining Levites—twelve towns. The Levites held forty-eight towns with their accompanying pastures within the territory of the People of Israel. Each of these towns had pastures surrounding it—this was the case for all these towns. * * * And so GOD gave Israel the entire land that he had solemnly vowed to give to their ancestors. They took possession of it and made themselves at home in it. And GOD gave them rest on all sides, as he had also solemnly vowed to their ancestors. Not a single one of their enemies was able to stand up to them—GOD handed over all their enemies to them. Not one word failed from all the good words GOD spoke to the house of Israel. So all the cities for the children of Merari by their families, which were remaining of the families of the Levites, were by their lot twelve cities. All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs. These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities. And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein. And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand. So the total number of towns given to the Merarite family groups was twelve. A total of forty-eight towns with their pastures in the land of Israel were given to the Levites. Each town had pastures around it. So the LORD gave the people all the land he had promised their ancestors. The people took the land and lived there. The LORD gave them peace on all sides, as he had promised their ancestors. None of their enemies defeated them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. He kept every promise he had made to the Israelites; each one came true.

So in all, twelve towns were allotted to the clan of Merari. The total number of towns and pasturelands within Israelite territory given to the Levites came to forty-eight. Every one of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it. So the LORD gave to Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD helped them conquer all their enemies. Not a single one of all the good promises the LORD had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true.

Merarite clans of the remaining Levites received twelve cities in all. The Levites received from the other tribes of Israel a total of forty-eight cities, each with the pasturelands around them. So YAHWEH gave Israel all the land he had promised their ancestors. They took possession of the land and settled there. YAHWEH kept his promise and gave them peace in the land just as he had promised to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies could stand against them. YAHWEH didn’t break a single promise that he made to the people of Israel. He faithfully kept every promise he made to them.
