Job 14:18-22
Job 14:18-22 The Message (MSG)
“Meanwhile, mountains wear down and boulders break up, Stones wear smooth and soil erodes, as you relentlessly grind down our hope. You’re too much for us. As always, you get the last word. We don’t like it and our faces show it, but you send us off anyway. If our children do well for themselves, we never know it; if they do badly, we’re spared the hurt. Body and soul, that’s it for us— a lifetime of pain, a lifetime of sorrow.”
Job 14:18-22 King James Version (KJV)
And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, And the rock is removed out of his place. The waters wear the stones: Thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; And thou destroyest the hope of man. Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. But his flesh upon him shall have pain, And his soul within him shall mourn.
Job 14:18-22 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
“But the falling mountain crumbles away, And the rock moves from its place; Water wears away stones, Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You destroy man’s hope. You forever overpower him and he departs; You change his appearance and send him away. His sons achieve honor, but he does not know it; Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it. But his body pains him, And he mourns only for himself.”
Job 14:18-22 New Century Version (NCV)
“A mountain washes away and crumbles; and a rock can be moved from its place. Water washes over stones and wears them down, and rushing waters wash away the dirt. In the same way, you destroy hope. You defeat people forever, and they are gone; you change their appearance and send them away. Their children are honored, but they do not know it; their children are disgraced, but they do not see it. They only feel the pain of their body and feel sorry for themselves.”
Job 14:18-22 American Standard Version (ASV)
But the mountain falling cometh to nought; And the rock is removed out of its place; The waters wear the stones; The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth: So thou destroyest the hope of man. Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth; Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not; And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. But his flesh upon him hath pain, And his soul within him mourneth.
Job 14:18-22 New International Version (NIV)
“But as a mountain erodes and crumbles and as a rock is moved from its place, as water wears away stones and torrents wash away the soil, so you destroy a person’s hope. You overpower them once for all, and they are gone; you change their countenance and send them away. If their children are honored, they do not know it; if their offspring are brought low, they do not see it. They feel but the pain of their own bodies and mourn only for themselves.”
Job 14:18-22 New King James Version (NKJV)
“But as a mountain falls and crumbles away, And as a rock is moved from its place; As water wears away stones, And as torrents wash away the soil of the earth; So You destroy the hope of man. You prevail forever against him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away. His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; They are brought low, and he does not perceive it. But his flesh will be in pain over it, And his soul will mourn over it.”
Job 14:18-22 Amplified Bible (AMP)
¶“But as a mountain, if it falls, crumbles into nothing, And as the rock is moved from its place, Water wears away the stones, Its floods and torrents wash away the soil of the earth, So You [O Lord] destroy the hope of man. “You prevail forever against him and overpower him, and he passes on; You change his appearance and send him away [from the presence of the living]. “His sons achieve honor, and he does not know it; They become insignificant, and he is not aware of it. “But his body [lamenting its decay] grieves in pain over it, And his soul mourns over [the loss of] himself.”
Job 14:18-22 New Living Translation (NLT)
“But instead, as mountains fall and crumble and as rocks fall from a cliff, as water wears away the stones and floods wash away the soil, so you destroy people’s hope. You always overpower them, and they pass from the scene. You disfigure them in death and send them away. They never know if their children grow up in honor or sink to insignificance. They suffer painfully; their life is full of trouble.”
Job 14:18-22 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
“But the mountain falls and crumbles away, and the rock is removed from its place; the waters wear away the stones; the torrents wash away the soil of the earth; so you destroy the hope of man. You prevail forever against him, and he passes; you change his countenance, and send him away. His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he perceives it not. He feels only the pain of his own body, and he mourns only for himself.”
