“Prepare buckler and shield, and advance for battle! Harness the horses; mount, O horsemen! Take your stations with your helmets, polish your spears, put on your armor! Why have I seen it? They are dismayed and have turned backward. Their warriors are beaten down and have fled in haste; they look not back— terror on every side! declares the LORD. “The swift cannot flee away, nor the warrior escape; in the north by the river Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen. “Who is this, rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge? Egypt rises like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth, I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’ Advance, O horses, and rage, O chariots! Let the warriors go out: men of Cush and Put who handle the shield, men of Lud, skilled in handling the bow. That day is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, to avenge himself on his foes. The sword shall devour and be sated and drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord GOD of hosts holds a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

The Message to Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt at the time it was defeated by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon while camped at Carchemish on the Euphrates River in the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah: “‘Present arms! March to the front! Harness the horses! Up in the saddles! Battle formation! Helmets on, spears sharpened, armor in place!’ But what’s this I see? They’re scared out of their wits! They break ranks and run for cover. Their soldiers panic. They run this way and that, stampeding blindly. It’s total chaos, total confusion, danger everywhere!” GOD’s Decree. “The swiftest runners won’t get away, the strongest soldiers won’t escape. In the north country, along the River Euphrates, they’ll stagger, stumble, and fall. “Who is this like the Nile in flood? like its streams torrential? Why, it’s Egypt like the Nile in flood, like its streams torrential, Saying, ‘I’ll take over the world. I’ll wipe out cities and peoples.’ Run, horses! Roll, chariots! Advance, soldiers from Cush and Put with your shields, Soldiers from Lud, experts with bow and arrow. “But it’s not your day. It’s the Master’s, me, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies— the day when I have it out with my enemies, The day when Sword puts an end to my enemies, when Sword exacts vengeance. I, the Master, GOD-of-the-Angel-Armies, will pile them on an altar—a huge sacrifice!— In the great north country, along the mighty Euphrates.

Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates. Who is this that cometh up as a flood, whose waters are moved as the rivers? Egypt riseth up like a flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers; and he saith, I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof. There is terror on every side!” says the LORD. “The fast runners cannot run away; the strong soldiers cannot escape. They stumble and fall in the north, by the Euphrates River. Who is this, rising up like the Nile River, like strong, fast rivers? Egypt rises up like the Nile River, like strong, fast rivers. Egypt says, ‘I will rise up and cover the earth. I will destroy cities and the people in them!’ Horsemen, charge into battle! Chariot drivers, drive hard! By the Euphrates River to the north, they stumble and fall. “Who is this, rising like the Nile at floodtime, overflowing all the land? It is the Egyptian army, overflowing all the land, boasting that it will cover the earth like a flood, destroying cities and their people. Charge, you horses and chariots; attack, you mighty warriors of Egypt! Come, all you allies from Ethiopia, Libya, and Lydia who are skilled with the shield and bow! Put on your armor and sharpen your spears!” But YAHWEH asks, “What do I see? The army breaking ranks and retreating? Their heroes flee for their lives, beaten, defeated, and terrified, not once looking back. Don’t let the swift ones get away. Stop the warriors from fleeing! In the north near the Euphrates River, they collapse, slain in battle. “Who is this that rises like the Nile, like a river in flood stage? Why, it’s Egypt that rose like the Nile, like a river in flood stage. It is prideful Pharaoh who says, ‘I will rise and cover the earth. I will destroy cities and the people who live in them.’ Go ahead, Egypt, tell your horsemen—‘Charge!’ And your chariots—‘Ride forth!’ March out your mighty warriors, your hired soldiers from Ethiopia and Libya with shield in hand, your archers from Lydia skilled with the bow.
