Jeremiah 22:17-19
Jeremiah 22:13-19 The Message (MSG)
“Doom to him who builds palaces but bullies people, who makes a fine house but destroys lives, Who cheats his workers and won’t pay them for their work, Who says, ‘I’ll build me an elaborate mansion with spacious rooms and fancy windows. I’ll bring in rare and expensive woods and the latest in interior decor.’ So, that makes you a king— living in a fancy palace? Your father got along just fine, didn’t he? He did what was right and treated people fairly, And things went well with him. He stuck up for the down-and-out, And things went well for Judah. Isn’t this what it means to know me?” GOD’s Decree! “But you’re blind and brainless. All you think about is yourself, Taking advantage of the weak, bulldozing your way, bullying victims.” This is God’s epitaph on Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: “Doom to this man! Nobody will shed tears over him, ‘Poor, poor brother!’ Nobody will shed tears over him, ‘Poor, poor master!’ They’ll give him a donkey’s funeral, drag him out of the city and dump him.
Jeremiah 22:17-19 King James Version (KJV)
But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it. Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah; They shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory! He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 22:17-19 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
“But your eyes and your heart Are intent only upon your own dishonest gain, And on shedding innocent blood And on practicing oppression and extortion.” Therefore thus says the LORD in regard to Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, “They will not lament for him: ‘Alas, my brother!’ or, ‘Alas, sister!’ They will not lament for him: ‘Alas for the master!’ or, ‘Alas for his splendor!’ He will be buried with a donkey’s burial, Dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 22:17-19 New Century Version (NCV)
“But you only look for and think about what you can get dishonestly. You are even willing to kill innocent people to get it. You feel free to hurt people and to steal from them.” So this is what the LORD says to Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: “The people of Judah will not cry when Jehoiakim dies, saying: ‘Oh, my brother,’ or ‘Oh, my sister.’ They will not cry for him, saying: ‘Oh, master,’ or ‘Oh, my king.’ They will bury him like a donkey, dragging his body away and throwing it outside the gates of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah 22:17-19 American Standard Version (ASV)
But thine eyes and thy heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it. Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: they shall not lament for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! The subjects will not lament for him: ‘Alas, master!’ or ‘Alas, majesty [how great was his glory]!’ “He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey— Dragged off and thrown out beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

“But you! You have eyes only for greed and dishonesty! You murder the innocent, oppress the poor, and reign ruthlessly.” Therefore, this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim, son of King Josiah: “The people will not mourn for him, crying to one another, ‘Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!’ His subjects will not mourn for him, crying, ‘Alas, our master is dead! Alas, his splendor is gone!’ He will be buried like a dead donkey— dragged out of Jerusalem and dumped outside the gates!
Jeremiah 22:17-19 The Passion Translation (TPT)
“But your eyes and heart are only interested in what brings you unjust profit, in violently oppressing your people even if it means shedding innocent blood.” Therefore, YAHWEH says to you, Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah: “No one will cry at your funeral or say, ‘How terrible! How sad!’ No one will weep for you or say, ‘How sad! Why did his majesty have to die?’ He will have a donkey’s burial. He will be dragged outside the gates of Jerusalem and left on the ground to rot.”
Jeremiah 22:17-19 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
