After Abimelech died, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo, was the next person to rescue Israel. He was from the tribe of Issachar but lived in the town of Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. He judged Israel for twenty-three years. When he died, he was buried in Shamir. After Tola died, Jair from Gilead judged Israel for twenty-two years. His thirty sons rode around on thirty donkeys, and they owned thirty towns in the land of Gilead, which are still called the Towns of Jair. When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon. Again the Israelites did evil in the LORD’s sight. They served the images of Baal and Ashtoreth, and the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia. They abandoned the LORD and no longer served him at all. So the LORD burned with anger against Israel, and he turned them over to the Philistines and the Ammonites, who began to oppress them that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites east of the Jordan River in the land of the Amorites (that is, in Gilead). The Ammonites also crossed to the west side of the Jordan and attacked Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim. The Israelites were in great distress. Finally, they cried out to the LORD for help, saying, “We have sinned against you because we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal.” The LORD replied, “Did I not rescue you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites? When they oppressed you, you cried out to me for help, and I rescued you. Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. So I will not rescue you anymore. Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them rescue you in your hour of distress!” But the Israelites pleaded with the LORD and said, “We have sinned. Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.” Then the Israelites put aside their foreign gods and served the LORD. And he was grieved by their misery.

After Abimelech died, YAHWEH raised up a man of Issachar’s tribe to deliver Israel. His name was Tola son of Puah and grandson of Dodo. He lived in the village of Shamir in the highlands of Ephraim. He was Israel’s champion-deliverer for twenty-three years; then he died and was buried at Shamir. After Tola, YAHWEH raised up a man from Gilead whose name was Jair. He was Israel’s champion-deliverer for twenty-two years. He had thirty sons, who rode on thirty donkeys, and thirty villages belonged to them. These villages are in the region of Gilead and are called Jair’s Villages to this day. Jair died and was buried at Kamon. The Israelites again did evil in the sight of YAHWEH, worshiping the Baals and the Ashtaroths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, and Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines. Because Israel entirely abandoned the worship of YAHWEH, YAHWEH became furious with Israel, and he handed them over to the oppression of the Philistines and the Ammonites. They crushed and oppressed all the Israelites for eighteen years. They ruled over all the Israelites living east of the Jordan in Gilead, in the land of the Amorites. The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan and fought against the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim, leaving Israel distressed. Then the Israelites desperately cried out to YAHWEH, “We have sinned against you because we have abandoned our God and have worshiped the Baals.” YAHWEH answered them, “Did I not rescue you in the past from the power of the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Midianites? When they swept over you and oppressed you and when you cried out in desperation to me, did I not deliver you and set you free from their power? Because you have abandoned me to serve false gods, I am no longer coming to your rescue! Go ahead and pray all you want to these new gods you have chosen. Let’s see if they will come and deliver you in your time of trouble!” But the Israelites continued to plead with YAHWEH, “Rescue us! We know we are guilty. You can do to us whatever seems good to you, but please, come to our rescue!” So they threw away the false gods from among them and returned to worshiping YAHWEH. At last, YAHWEH felt Israel’s misery and could bear it no longer.

Tola son of Puah, the son of Dodo, was next after Abimelech. He rose to the occasion to save Israel. He was a man of Issachar. He lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. He judged Israel for twenty-three years and then died and was buried at Shamir. After him, Jair the Gileadite stepped into leadership. He judged Israel for twenty-two years. He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys and had thirty towns in Gilead. The towns are still called Jair’s Villages. Jair died and was buried in Kamon. * * * And then the People of Israel went back to doing evil in GOD’s sight. They worshiped the Baal gods and Ashtoreth goddesses: gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab; gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines. They just walked off and left GOD, quit worshiping him. And GOD exploded in hot anger at Israel and sold them off to the Philistines and Ammonites, who, beginning that year, bullied and battered the People of Israel mercilessly. For eighteen years they had them under their thumb, all the People of Israel who lived east of the Jordan in the Amorite country of Gilead. Then the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to go to war also against Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim. Israel was in a bad way! The People of Israel cried out to GOD for help: “We’ve sinned against you! We left our God and worshiped the Baal gods!” GOD answered the People of Israel: “When the Egyptians, Amorites, Ammonites, Philistines, Sidonians—even Amalek and Midian!—oppressed you and you cried out to me for help, I saved you from them. And now you’ve gone off and betrayed me, worshiping other gods. I’m not saving you anymore. Go ahead! Cry out for help to the gods you’ve chosen—let them get you out of the mess you’re in!” The People of Israel said to GOD: “We’ve sinned. Do to us whatever you think best, but please, get us out of this!” Then they cleaned house of the foreign gods and worshiped only GOD. And GOD took Israel’s troubles to heart.

In the same year those people destroyed the Israelites who lived east of the Jordan River in the region of Gilead, where the Amorites lived. So the Israelites suffered for eighteen years. The Ammonites then crossed the Jordan River to fight the people of Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim, causing much trouble to the people of Israel. So the Israelites cried out to the LORD, “We have sinned against you. We left our God and worshiped the Baal idols.” The LORD answered the Israelites, “When the Egyptians, Amorites, Ammonites, Philistines, Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites were cruel to you, you cried out to me, and I saved you. But now you have left me again and have worshiped other gods. So I refuse to save you again. You have chosen those gods. So go call to them for help. Let them save you when you are in trouble.” But the people of Israel said to the LORD, “We have sinned. Do to us whatever you want, but please save us today!” Then the Israelites threw away the foreign gods among them, and they worshiped the LORD again. So he felt sorry for them when he saw their suffering.
