James 4:1,6-7
James 4:1-2 The Message (MSG)
Where do you think all these appalling wars and quarrels come from? Do you think they just happen? Think again. They come about because you want your own way, and fight for it deep inside yourselves. You lust for what you don’t have and are willing to kill to get it. You want what isn’t yours and will risk violence to get your hands on it.
James 4:4-6-7-10 The Message (MSG)
You’re cheating on God. If all you want is your own way, flirting with the world every chance you get, you end up enemies of God and his way. And do you suppose God doesn’t care? The proverb has it that “he’s a fiercely jealous lover.” And what he gives in love is far better than anything else you’ll find. It’s common knowledge that “God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble.” So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him make himself scarce. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
James 4:1 King James Version (KJV)
From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
James 4:6-7 King James Version (KJV)
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:1 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
What is the source of quarrels and conflicts among you? Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members?
James 4:6-7 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
James 4:1 New Century Version (NCV)
Do you know where your fights and arguments come from? They come from the selfish desires that war within you.
James 4:6-7 New Century Version (NCV)
But God gives us even more grace, as the Scripture says, “God is against the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.” So give yourselves completely to God. Stand against the devil, and the devil will run from you.
James 4:1 American Standard Version (ASV)
Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members?
James 4:6-7 American Standard Version (ASV)
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:1 New International Version (NIV)
What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?
James 4:6-7 New International Version (NIV)
But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:1 New King James Version (NKJV)
Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?
James 4:6-7 New King James Version (NKJV)
But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
James 4:1 Amplified Bible (AMP)
What leads to [the unending] quarrels and conflicts among you? Do they not come from your [hedonistic] desires that wage war in your [bodily] members [fighting for control over you]?
James 4:6-7 Amplified Bible (AMP)
But He gives us more and more grace [through the power of the Holy Spirit to defy sin and live an obedient life that reflects both our faith and our gratitude for our salvation]. Therefore, it says, “GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD and HAUGHTY, BUT [continually] GIVES [the gift of] GRACE TO THE HUMBLE [who turn away from self-righteousness].” So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you.
James 4:1 New Living Translation (NLT)
What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?
James 4:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)
And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
James 4:1 The Passion Translation (TPT)
What is the cause of your conflicts and quarrels with each other? Doesn’t the battle begin inside of you as you fight to have your own way and fulfill your own desires?
James (Jacob) 4:6-7 The Passion Translation (TPT)
But he continues to pour out more and more grace upon us. For it says, “God resists you when you are proud but continually pours out grace when you are humble.” So then, surrender to God. Stand up to the devil and resist him and he will flee in agony.
