Hebrews 4:4,9-10
Hebrews 4:3-7 The Message (MSG)
God made that vow, even though he’d finished his part before the foundation of the world. Somewhere it’s written, “God rested the seventh day, having completed his work,” but in this other text he says, “They’ll never be able to sit down and rest.” So this promise has not yet been fulfilled. Those earlier ones never did get to the place of rest because they were disobedient. God keeps renewing the promise and setting the date as today, just as he did in David’s psalm, centuries later than the original invitation: Today, please listen, don’t turn a deaf ear . . .
Hebrews 4:8-11-8-11 The Message (MSG)
And so this is still a live promise. It wasn’t canceled at the time of Joshua; otherwise, God wouldn’t keep renewing the appointment for “today.” The promise of “arrival” and “rest” is still there for God’s people. God himself is at rest. And at the end of the journey we’ll surely rest with God. So let’s keep at it and eventually arrive at the place of rest, not drop out through some sort of disobedience.
Hebrews 4:4 King James Version (KJV)
For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
Hebrews 4:9-10 King James Version (KJV)
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:4 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
For He has said somewhere concerning the seventh day: “AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS”
Hebrews 4:9-10 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.
Hebrews 4:4 New Century Version (NCV)
In the Scriptures he talked about the seventh day of the week: “And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.”
Hebrews 4:9-10 New Century Version (NCV)
This shows that the rest for God’s people is still coming. Anyone who enters God’s rest will rest from his work as God did.
Hebrews 4:4 American Standard Version (ASV)
For he hath said somewhere of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works
Hebrews 4:9-10 American Standard Version (ASV)
There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from his works, as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:4 New International Version (NIV)
For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.”
Hebrews 4:9-10 New International Version (NIV)
There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.
Hebrews 4:4 New King James Version (NKJV)
For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”
Hebrews 4:9-10 New King James Version (NKJV)
There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
Hebrews 4:4 Amplified Bible (AMP)
For somewhere [in Scripture] He has said this about the seventh day: “AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS”; [Gen 2:2]
Hebrews 4:9-10 Amplified Bible (AMP)
So there remains a [full and complete] Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has once entered His rest has also rested from [the weariness and pain of] his [human] labors, just as God rested from [those labors uniquely] His own. [Gen 2:2]
Hebrews 4:4 New Living Translation (NLT)
We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.”
Hebrews 4:9-10 New Living Translation (NLT)
So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.
Hebrews 4:4 The Passion Translation (TPT)
for it says in the Scriptures, And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.
Hebrews 4:9-10 The Passion Translation (TPT)
So we conclude that there is still a full and complete Sabbath-rest waiting for believers to experience. As we enter into God’s faith-rest life we cease from our own works, just as God celebrates his finished works and rests in them.
Hebrews 4:4 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”
