“ ‘Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise. “ ‘Greece, Tubal and Meshek did business with you; they traded human beings and articles of bronze for your wares. “ ‘Men of Beth Togarmah exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise. “ ‘The men of Rhodes traded with you, and many coastlands were your customers; they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony. “ ‘Aram did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise, purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen, coral and rubies for your merchandise. “ ‘Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith and confections, honey, olive oil and balm for your wares. “ ‘Damascus did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods. Your wealth, merchandise and wares, your mariners, sailors and shipwrights, your merchants and all your soldiers, and everyone else on board will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your shipwreck. The shorelands will quake when your sailors cry out. All who handle the oars will abandon their ships; the mariners and all the sailors will stand on the shore. They will raise their voice and cry bitterly over you; they will sprinkle dust on their heads and roll in ashes. They will shave their heads because of you and will put on sackcloth. They will weep over you with anguish of soul and with bitter mourning. As they wail and mourn over you, they will take up a lament concerning you: “Who was ever silenced like Tyre, surrounded by the sea?” When your merchandise went out on the seas, you satisfied many nations; with your great wealth and your wares you enriched the kings of the earth. Now you are shattered by the sea in the depths of the waters; your wares and all your company have gone down with you. All who live in the coastlands are appalled at you; their kings shudder with horror and their faces are distorted with fear. Merchants came to you from Dedan. Numerous coastlands were your captive markets; they brought payment in ivory tusks and ebony wood. “Syria sent merchants to buy your rich variety of goods. They traded turquoise, purple dyes, embroidery, fine linen, and jewelry of coral and rubies. Judah and Israel traded for your wares, offering wheat from Minnith, figs, honey, olive oil, and balm. “Damascus sent merchants to buy your rich variety of goods, bringing wine from Helbon and white wool from Zahar. Your cities by the sea tremble as your pilots cry out in terror. All the oarsmen abandon their ships; the sailors and pilots stand on the shore. They cry aloud over you and weep bitterly. Damascus traded with you because of the abundance of your handiworks and the immense wealth of every kind, with the wine of Helbon [Aleppo] and the white wool [of Sachar in Syria]. Vedan and Javan traded with yarn from Uzal [in Arabia] for your wares; wrought iron, cassia, and sweet cane were among your merchandise. Dedan traded with you in saddle blankets for riding. Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, they were your customers for lambs, rams, and goats [favored by you]; for these they were your customers. The merchants of Sheba and Raamah [in Arabia], they traded with you; they paid for your wares with the choicest of all kinds of spices and all kinds of precious stones and gold. Haran and Canneh and Eden [in Mesopotamia], the merchants of Sheba [on the Euphrates], Asshur and Chilmad traded with you. They traded with you in choice fabrics and garments, in clothes of blue or violet and embroidered work, and in [treasures of] multi-colored damask and knotted carpets bound with tightly wound cords, which were among your merchandise. The ships of Tarshish were the caravans for your merchandise, And you [Tyre] were replenished and very glorious [heavily laden with an imposing fleet] In the heart of the seas. ¶“Your rowers have brought you Into great and deep waters; The east wind has broken and shipwrecked you In the heart of the seas. “Your riches, your wares, your merchandise Your oarsmen and your pilots, Your caulkers, your dealers in merchandise, And all your men of war who are with you, With all your company that is in your midst, Will sink in the heart of the seas On the day of your ruin. “The pasture lands and the countryside will shake At the [piercing] sound of the [hopeless, wailing] cry of your pilots. “All who handle the oar, The mariners and all the pilots of the sea Will come down from their ships; They will stand on the shore, And they will make their voice heard [as they wail loudly] over you And they will cry bitterly. The Greeks along with nations of Tubal and Meshech traded with you. They sold you slaves and metal utensils. The people of Beth Togarmah traded for your goods, your war horses and work horses and mules. The people of Rhodes traded with you; many coastal lands were your special customers and paid you in ivory tusks and ebony wood. Edom traded with you emeralds, purple cloth, embroidered work and fine linen, coral and rubies for your many fine manufactured goods. Judah and the land of Israel also paid for your goods with the finest millet, spices, honey, olive oil, and balm. Damascus traded with you, for quantities of your abundant resources of every kind, furnishing you with wine from Helbon and unbleached wool, casks of wine from Izalla, polished iron, cassia and calamus in exchange for your goods. Dedan traded with you in saddle blankets. Arabia and all the sheikhs of Kedar were your clients, selling sheep and goats to you. Businessmen of Sheba and Raamah traded with you the finest spices, precious stones, and gold. Haran, Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad were your trading partners. In your marketplace they sold you gorgeous embroidered clothing, purple cloaks, multi-colored carpets, and well-made cords for your merchandise.’ ” “ ‘Heavily loaded Spanish ships carried your wares in the heart of the seas. When they hear the shouts of your drowning sailors, the people on shore will tremble with fear. All the oarsmen will abandon ship; the seamen and sailors will come ashore. They will wail aloud over you and weep bitterly. They will throw dust on their heads in mourning and lie in ashes. They will shave their heads in sorrow for you and dress themselves in sackcloth. They will weep bitterly for you, Tyre, with heartfelt sorrow over your fall. Grieving, they will chant a funeral song for you, and wail with lament over you, saying: “Who is like Tyre, like a tower surrounded by the sea?” When you exported your goods to satisfy so many peoples with the abundance of your wealth and wares you enriched the kings of the earth. Now you are broken to pieces by the waves; you lie at the bottom of the sea. Your cargo and all your crew have foundered with you. Those who dwell on the coast and the islands are stunned at your fate. Horror is written on the faces of their kings, and their hair stands on end. Your trading partners hiss at you in scorn, for you have come to a dreadful end. You are gone forever, never to return!’ ”
