1 Corinthians 10:23,25,31
1 Corinthians 10:23 New King James Version (NKJV)
All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.
I Corinthians 10:25 New King James Version (NKJV)
Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake
I Corinthians 10:31 New King James Version (NKJV)
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
1 Corinthians 10:25 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
1 Corinthians 10:31 English Standard Version 2016 (ESV)
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23-24 The Message (MSG)
Looking at it one way, you could say, “Anything goes. Because of God’s immense generosity and grace, we don’t have to dissect and scrutinize every action to see if it will pass muster.” But the point is not to just get by. We want to live well, but our foremost efforts should be to help others live well.
1 Corinthians 10:25-28 The Message (MSG)
With that as a base to work from, common sense can take you the rest of the way. Eat anything sold at the butcher shop, for instance; you don’t have to run an “idolatry test” on every item. “The earth,” after all, “is God’s, and everything in it.” That “everything” certainly includes the leg of lamb in the butcher shop. If a nonbeliever invites you to dinner and you feel like going, go ahead and enjoy yourself; eat everything placed before you. It would be both bad manners and bad spirituality to cross-examine your host on the ethical purity of each course as it is served. On the other hand, if he goes out of his way to tell you that this or that was sacrificed to god or goddess so-and-so, you should pass. Even though you may be indifferent as to where it came from, he isn’t, and you don’t want to send mixed messages to him about who you are worshiping.
1 Corinthians 10:31-33 The Message (MSG)
So eat your meals heartily, not worrying about what others say about you—you’re eating to God’s glory, after all, not to please them. As a matter of fact, do everything that way, heartily and freely to God’s glory. At the same time, don’t be callous in your exercise of freedom, thoughtlessly stepping on the toes of those who aren’t as free as you are. I try my best to be considerate of everyone’s feelings in all these matters; I hope you will be, too.
1 Corinthians 10:23 King James Version (KJV)
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
1 Corinthians 10:25 King James Version (KJV)
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake
1 Corinthians 10:31 King James Version (KJV)
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.
1 Corinthians 10:25 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake
1 Corinthians 10:31 New American Standard Bible - NASB 1995 (NASB1995)
Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 New Century Version (NCV)
“We are allowed to do all things,” but not all things are good for us to do. “We are allowed to do all things,” but not all things help others grow stronger.
1 Corinthians 10:25 New Century Version (NCV)
Eat any meat that is sold in the meat market. Do not ask questions about it.
1 Corinthians 10:31 New Century Version (NCV)
The answer is, if you eat or drink, or if you do anything, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 American Standard Version (ASV)
All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful; but not all things edify.
1 Corinthians 10:25 American Standard Version (ASV)
Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake
1 Corinthians 10:31 American Standard Version (ASV)
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 New International Version (NIV)
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
1 Corinthians 10:25 New International Version (NIV)
Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience
1 Corinthians 10:31 New International Version (NIV)
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 Amplified Bible (AMP)
All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life].
1 Corinthians 10:25 Amplified Bible (AMP)
[Regarding meat offered to idols:] Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking any questions for the sake of your conscience
1 Corinthians 10:31 Amplified Bible (AMP)
So then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of [our great] God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 New Living Translation (NLT)
You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is beneficial.
1 Corinthians 10:25 New Living Translation (NLT)
So you may eat any meat that is sold in the marketplace without raising questions of conscience.
1 Corinthians 10:31 New Living Translation (NLT)
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:23 The Passion Translation (TPT)
You say, “Under grace there are no rules and we’re free to do anything we please.” Not exactly. Because not everything promotes growth in others. Your slogan, “We’re allowed to do anything we choose,” may be true—but not everything causes the spiritual advancement of others.
