Psalm 14
A Portrait of Sinners
For the choir director. Of David.
1The fool says in his heart, “There’s no God.”#Ps 10:4; 53:1
They are corrupt; they do vile deeds.
There is no one who does good.
2The Lord looks down from heaven on the human race#14:2 Or the descendants of Adam#Ps 33:13–15
to see if there is one who is wise,
one who seeks God.
3All have turned away;
all alike have become corrupt.
There is no one who does good,
not even one.#Ps 12:1; 53:1–3; Mc 7:2; Rm 3:10–12
4Will evildoers never understand?
They consume my people as they consume bread;#Ps 27:2; Mc 3:3
they do not call on the Lord.#Is 64:7
5Then#14:5 Or There they will be filled with dread,
for God is with those who are#14:5 Lit with the generation of the righteous.#Ps 53:5
6You sinners frustrate the plans of the oppressed,#Ezr 4:5
but the Lord is his refuge.#Ps 9:9; 94:22
7Oh, that Israel’s deliverance would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,#14:7 Or restores his captive people
let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.#Ps 53:6
