Amos 1:1-5

Amos is often called a prophet of doom. When you begin to read his prophecy, it doesn’t take long to realize that nickname fits. On the surface, his prophecy doesn’t sound like a happy formula for the good life. However, every condemnation he gives serves as an invitation, a cry for us to “seek God and live” (Amos 5:4). This kind of living will bring us peace and true prosperity.

Written by the shepherd-prophet Amos, this book exposes Israel's sinful religious hypocrisy and corrupt leadership. Amos prophesies against their rejection of God's law and the terrible social injustice perpetrated against the poor and vulnerable. As Amos foretells judgment on many nations, including Israel, we are reminded of the ultimate need for restoration and the promise of greater redemption.

Amos was a prophet on a mission to shake Israel out of their moral complacency. He prophesied during a time of great stability and prosperity when Israel had abandoned God and neglected the vulnerable in society.
