Romans 1

Greeting
1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle # 1Co 1:1 and set apart for the gospel of God, # Ro 15:16 2which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, # Ro 3:21; Titus 1:2 3concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh # Ge 3:15; Mt 1:1; Jn 1:14; Gal 4:4 4and declared to be the Son of God with power, # 2Co 13:4 according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. 5Through Him we have received grace and apostleship # Ac 1:25 for the obedience of faith among all nations for His name, # Ac 6:7 6among whom you also are called by Jesus Christ: # Rev 17:14
7To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. # 2Co 13:14; Col 1:2
Paul’s Desire to Visit Rome
8First, I thank my God # Ro 6:17 through Jesus Christ for you all, because your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. # Ro 16:19 9For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit # Ro 9:1; 2Co 1:23; 2Ti 1:3 in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing, I mention you always in my prayers, 10making request if, by any means, now at last I might find a way in the will of God to come to you. # Ac 18:21; Ro 15:32
11For I long to see you, # Ro 15:23 that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be strengthened. 12This is so that I may be encouraged together with you by each other’s faith, # 2Pe 1:1 both yours and mine. 13Now I would not have you unaware, brothers, that I often intended to come to you (but was prevented until now), # Ac 16:7; 19:21 that I might have a harvest among you also, # Jn 4:36 even as among the other Gentiles.
14I am a debtor both to the Greeks and to the barbarians, both to the wise and to the unwise. 15So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
The Gospel Defined
16For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. # Mk 8:38 For it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. # Ro 2:9 17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed # Ro 3:21 from faith to faith. As it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” # Hab 2:4; Gal 3:11 # 1:17 Hab 2:4.
The Guilt of Israel
18The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, # Eph 5:6; Col 3:6 who suppress the truth through unrighteousness. 19For what may be known of God has been revealed in them, because God has shown it to them. # Ro 2:18 20The invisible things about Him—His eternal power and deity # 1Ti 1:17 —have been clearly seen since the creation of the world and are understood by the things that are made, # Dt 4:19; Ps 19:1–6 so that they are without excuse.
21Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him or give thanks to Him as God, # Ex 32; Hos 2:8 but became futile in their imaginations, # 2Ki 17:15; Jer 2:5 and their foolish hearts were darkened. # Isa 8:20 22Claiming to be wise, they became fools. # Jer 10:14 23They changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man, birds, four-footed beasts, # Dt 4:15–19; Ps 106:20; Jer 2:11 and creeping things. # 2Ki 18:4
24Therefore God gave them up to impurity through the lusts of their hearts, # Ps 81:12; Ro 1:26, 28 to dishonor their own bodies among themselves. # 1Th 4:4 25They turned the truth of God into a lie # Isa 44:20 and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, # Jer 10:14; 16:19 who is blessed forever. Amen. # Ro 9:5
26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. # Ro 1:24, 28 Their women exchanged the natural function for what is against nature. # Lev 18:22–28; Dt 23:17–18 27Likewise the men, leaving the natural function of the woman, burned in their lust toward one another, men with men doing that which is shameful, # Ge 19:5; Lev 18:22; 20:13; Jdg 19:22 and receiving in themselves the due penalty of their error.
28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them over to a debased mind, # Jer 6:30; 9:6; Ro 1:24, 26 to do those things which are not proper. 29They were filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and craftiness. They are gossips, # 2Co 12:20 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, proud, boastful, inventors of evil things, and disobedient toward parents, # 2Ti 3:2 31without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, calloused, and unmerciful, # 2Ti 3:3 32who know the righteous requirement of God, that those who commit such things are worthy of death. # Lev 20:9, 13; Ro 6:21 They not only do them, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them. # Ps 50:18
