Faith Triumphs in Trouble
1Therefore, #Is. 32:17; John 16:33having been justified by faith, we have #(Is. 53:5); Acts 10:36; (Eph. 2:14)peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2#(John 10:9; Eph. 2:18; 3:12; Heb. 10:19; 1 Pet. 3:18)through whom also we have access by faith into this grace #1 Cor. 15:1in which we stand, and #Heb. 3:6rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3And not only that, but #Matt. 5:11, 12; (John 16:33; Acts 5:41; 2 Cor. 12:9); James 1:2we also glory in tribulations, #James 1:3knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4#Phil. 2:22; (James 1:12)and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5#Phil. 1:20Now hope does not disappoint, #2 Cor. 1:22; Eph. 1:13because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Christ in Our Place
6For when we were still without strength, in due time #Is. 53:5; (Rom. 4:25; 5:8; 8:32; Gal. 2:20; Eph. 5:2)Christ died for the ungodly. 7For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8But #(John 3:16; 15:13; Rom. 8:39)God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Much more then, having now been justified #Eph. 2:13; (1 John 1:7)by His blood, we shall be saved #Rom. 1:18; 1 Thess. 1:10from wrath through Him. 10For #(Rom. 8:32)if when we were enemies #Rom. 11:28; 2 Cor. 5:18; (Eph. 2:5, 6); Col. 1:21we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved #John 14:19by His life. 11And not only that, but we also #(Gal. 4:9)rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
12Therefore, just as #Gen. 2:17; 3:6, 19; (Rom. 5:15–17; 1 Cor. 15:21)through one man sin entered the world, and #Gen. 2:17death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13(For until the law sin was in the world, but #1 John 3:4sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, #(1 Cor. 15:21, 22)who is a type of Him who was to come. 15But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded #(Is. 53:11)to many. 16And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
18Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through #(1 Cor. 15:21, 45)one Man’s righteous act the free gift came #Matt. 1:21; (John 12:32)to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by #Is. 53:11, 12; (Phil. 2:8)one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
20Moreover #John 15:22the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace #Luke 7:47; Rom. 6:1; 1 Tim. 1:14abounded much more, 21so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
