Exodus 22:8, 12-13

But if the thief is never found, the owner of the house must make a promise before God that he has not stolen his neighbor’s things.

But if the animal was stolen from the neighbor, he must pay the owner for it. If wild animals killed it, the neighbor must bring the body as proof, and he will not have to pay for the animal that was killed.
