Saül mourut parce qu'il avait été infidèle envers le Seigneur : il avait négligé d'obéir à ses commandements, et il avait même évoqué l'esprit d'un mort pour le consulter, au lieu de consulter le Seigneur. Ce dernier le fit donc mourir et confia la royauté à David, fils de Jessé.
