Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

‘The time has come,’ he said. ‘The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!’

Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’

I baptise you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’

‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.

The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.
