И Бог насади райска градина в Едем, на изток, и настани там човека, когото създаде. И Господ Бог направи да израснат от земята всякакви дървета, хубави наглед и добри за храна, и посред градината дърво на живота и дърво за познаване добро и зло. И една река течеше в Едем да напоява градината; оттам тя се разклоняваше на четири реки. Името на първата беше Пишон. Тя е, която обикаля по цялата Хавилска земя, където има злато. Златото на тази земя е добро. Там има бделий и ониксов камък. Името на втората река е Гихон. Тя обикаля през цялата земя Куш. Името на третата река е Тигър и тече на изток от Ашур. Четвъртата река е Ефрат. След това Господ Бог взе човека и го засели в градината Едем да я обработва и да я пази. И Господ Бог заповяда на човека, като каза: „Ти можеш свободно да ядеш от всяко дърво в градината освен от дървото за познаване на добро и зло – да не ядеш от него, защото в деня, когато ядеш от него, ти със сигурност ще умреш.“
