Revelation 3:7-13

I. Introduction:

a. Philadelphia was built in a dangerous volcanic area located about 28 miles southeast of Sardis, in what is now modern Turkey.

b. It was completely destroyed by an earthquake in AD 17, but was completely rebuilt.

c. Philadelphia literally means “brotherly love,” a name that would characterize the church that would keep their word against persecution.

d. The question may arise in our contemporary times, why the current volatility in modern Turkey with the recent attempted coup?
II. The Church Must Approach and Recognize the Owner of the Keys to Open the Door (3:7).
III. The Church Must Give Up Gaining Strength as a Key to Destroying the Power of Satan (3:8-9)
Quote:
They have sought their usefulness through their holiness, and not their holiness through their usefulness; and therefore it is they have had such signal triumphs.
W. M Taylor
Quote:
Thus we are reminded that where there is much strength there is also a disposition to trust in that; while, on the other hand, where there is conscious feebleness there is felt also the necessity of making application for the might of the Most High.
W. M. Taylor
IV. The Church Must Keep the Word of Patience as a Key to Overcome Temptation (3:8, 10)
Quote:
Fidelity always rises. It is, in fact, irrepressible; for when Christ says to it, "Come up higher," no one can hold it down.
W.M. Taylor
V. The Church Must Not Deny, But Rather Proclaim the Name of Christ as a Key to Permanence (3:8, 11-12)
Quote:
The hour needs its man quite as much as the man needs the hour. The Lord help you to keep His word, and then to go in for public testimony.
Charles Spurgeon
